Default Bar and Chain Oil

Who uses high grade bar and chain oil? I had an old boss from a landscaping company who only used SAE-30 automobile motor oil in his saws for bar and chain lubrication. He claimed that it was just as good, cheap and readily available more so than professional chainsaw oils. Does anyone agree? Are cheap motor oils just as good for 1/2 the price?

The only real differnce is bar oil has tackifiers, which help it cling to the bar and chain better, other than that motor oil is just as good but it is also thinner so you'll go through it quicker so in the long run you'd be better off with regular bar oil.He can buy bar oil at any auto zone or advance auto parts, hell walmart and lowes sells it.

Hey! What about the scrooges that will only use old engine oil out of the tractor for bar oil?
Personally I prefer used tractor transmission oil, no black spots on the clean washing that's hanging on the clothesline near the firewood heap/snake hilton.
I can hear Ekka coughing already!

I was under the impression that motor oil was alot more damaging to surrounding plant life than chain oil and didn't give the chain and bar sufficient lubrication, causing excessive wear, On 75% of my jobs we have to use Bio oil, due to ponds, local flora, fauna and forrestry commission rules on some sites. Motor oil is just unexcuseable really

Bio-oil?
Please explain?
Is this a vegetable based oil or one of the exotic synthetics?

They used to sell a sunflower seed based bar oil at a local shop here...not no more, (new) guy at the shop said they never had it, never heard of it...

...Bas###ds!

Found this in a pdf earlier, check it.

Quote:
The specifications for Tessol's Chainsaw "Bar and Chain" oil have been converted to English. Working through
the Tunap Group of Wolffrathausen Germany, the oil was tested for lubricity characteristics and compared to a
petroleum based product. The test measuring method was through a "oscillation, friction and wear tester".
Compared to the petroleum based "bar and chain" oil, the bio based oil has a significantly lower coefficient of
friction and eliminates wear by a factor of more than five.
Here's pdf.

Why buy it when you can go to the fish & chip shop, spend your money on a feed and take their old fryer oil for free

And when you get hungry on the job you can eat the crusties out of the oil drum

Just stirrin

Um....I just use Stihl's bar & chain oil. I've got both their normal stuff, and their bio-oil type stuff.

Boring, eh? Stihl brand and all? yeah....

Bar and chain oil here is about the same price as motor oil. We buy it in 205 litre (50 US gal) drums, works out about $4 per litre.

My groundies have a unique approach to bar lubrication. It is their belief that my $270 saw-proof pants require regular lubrication. To this end, they do not always lock-close the oil fill caps on various saws. My pants are well lubricated.

Worse than new motor oil.

After reading these posts I'm starting to think that any oil will likely suffice in keeping the bar/chain well lubricated. Seems that there may be other factors which can influence using special oils, i.e.- environmental issues.

Does standard bar oil have any effect on a tree when you make cuts during a pruning operation?

I haven't heard of Traditional bar/chain oil being more harmful, but it won't decompose as fast as bio-oil.

2 cycle/air pollution may stick to oil and won't wash away as fast, remain longer?

Read this recently...

Quote:
Heavy metals may come from industrial or mining operations, gasoline, motor oil, and even residue from some pesticides. Urban soils tend to have higher concentrations of the heavy metals: arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, nickel, and zinc; which are toxic to trees, severely hurting the trees ability to uptake nutrients.

I know zip about that negative effects of respective oils but I do know that bar oil throws a long way. I often ask people to cover their outdoor ponds when I am pruning. I have seen oil film on ponds 10m away from a job and have no recollection of even pointing the bar that way.

Thats why we both cover all surrounding ponds Where possible and use bio oil as it kills koi carp at an alarming rate and they are really expensive to rebuy.
