I have some questions regarding these saws. I have been running my friends ms660 for awhile because he had surgery and i really like it. So i found a good deal on a new one and i got it. Ive read alot of good comments about them. The problem is the other day i got his 395xp and ran it now im confused it will cut circles around the 660 ive been running. Im cutting hardwood and they both have 24inch bars and good chains only difference is the husky has a 7 tooth and stihl has an 8. How much diff should that make? I havent ran the 660 i got because im thinking of selling it and getn me a 395 or a 390. What kind of power difference is there between the two. The biggest bar i run would be a 28. Maybe the 660 i have been running has problems im not sure but it just feels very weak when compared to the 395.

If you have a new 660 it will be gutless. But that all can be changed easily. Look at the muffler, plain front? Get a Dual Port front cover. Next look at the pencil eraser size exhaust outlet on the side. Open that hole all the way up to the inner part of outlet. Look inside the muffler in rear, open that cage or remove it. remove the limiters on the carb and retune for a free breathing 660. The new 395's feel weak compared to my old woods ported 066, but that isnt fair comparison. Now I ran a well broken in 395 that put the new 395 to shame. So maybe you need to do the above muffler changes and get about 20 tanks through your 660. |

The 660 i have been running has a plain muffler on it i have read that the 066 magnum had a dual port muffler and it had 7.8 hp. The ms660 i got has never even had gas in it. I was thinking if i keep it i would break it in and then get me a dual port muffler. I would like for it to have the power of the 395 without having to have any major work done. What would i need to do to make it like the 066 magnum? Or do u think i would be better off to get me a husky? Im sorry for all the questions im kinda new to this and im still learning thanks for the help.

Get the husky,if you port out the husky like was suggested for the stihl the husky will still cut circles around it and they're usually cheaper than stihls.

He already owns the 660, why not fix it right. I wasn't suggesting porting. I was suggesting DP cover, open muffler original exhaust outlet, remove or open cage and adjust carb. Have you ever lifted a 660 and 395 side by side with same bar and chain? ![]() I would take either for short work, but if I had to carry that puppy 395 around forget it. Before you go there on weight, I have 2 3120, 2 166, 2 084 .

| For a work saw the 084 all day long. I just got the 2 3120's, in Jan and Feb. 1 was for race and 1 is stock for a practice saw plus work saw. I was ripping some seasoned elm the other day with the stock one, shaking it down real good. It is a 92 and had the 10.5k-11k coil. I sill didnt like that and put a unlimited coil and re-timed the flywheel. Holy chit it was a different animal now. ![]() I still like the build of the 084 over the 3120. JMO. |

What kind of gains should i expect out of the 660 mods mentioned above? How does a stock 660 compare to a stock 390 with a 28 inch bar i have never ran a 390. Thanks for the help. I cant find anybody around here that mods saws.

Just be careful WHO you choose. Not all woods porters are created equal. Alot of them are hyped up, but their saws fall short of their real potential. Buyer beware. ![]() This ole 066 I have is just a basic woods port with stock flat top piston and just the right recipe numbers. Ported by a fellow in WV. My friend up the road has also built one identical to this one for a stihl dealer. Beware they do like gas afterwords. ![]() |

My 395XP is a little more bulky then my 066, but then again all I run on the 395 is a 32" b/c. Good match for its size. I like the 395s smooth power and I only got about 20 tanks through it. The biggest thing I love about the 395XP is I haven't cleaned its air filter yet!! Still clean. When I think of those 18 years running the 066.... the constant dirty air filter was a big PITA. And when you think about it, that 066 is slowly losing h.p starting shortly after the air filter is cleaned to when it needs cleaning again in a day's time. Willard |
