First off great site and I look forward to doing a lot of reading in the coming weeks. Looking for info on 346xp (parts list, service man etc... online download?). After running stihls (great saws) the last 17 years I ordered a 346xp online (online pricing and online parts procurement were a big reason for the selection that and the 346 seemed to have the edge in the 50cc class). Anyway the 346 is supposed to be setup when it arrives. Are there any adjustment concerns on this saw (factory lean etc)? What should the max rpm be on the 346 or does the manual provide the specifications? My stihls have always been used and needed some TLC. I'm looking forward to taking care of one from the start. |

The NE 346xp max rev-limited coil is around 14.1K If you get a green gas cap on your new 346, you got the catalytic converter muffler. Toss it IMO and get the other free flowing muffler. IF it sounds fat from the get go and you have a tach bouncing around numbers wise. You are hitting the rev-limiter. Not good it is lean. Set to 4 stroking and then back off a hair JMO if doing by ear. If you got a tach, I would run it in the mid to high 13.5K-13.8K for break in. If your gas cap looks like this you got the right muffler on it. http://www.treeworld.info/attachment...46xpne-001.jpg |

"Toss it IMO and get the other free flowing muffler." Not sure what it will have on it. Do you have a part # for the non cat muffler? Thanks for the info. |

Well I received the one with the cat. Win some lose some. Unfortunately it will go in for warranty work today. It ran less than 10 minutes and started being starved for fuel and then it would not even idle. Once it died the primer bulb won't pressurize and saw won't start. Will see what shakes out during the warranty work. The whole situation was pretty comical. Once I get the thing back I can give you a better impression. |

Tell them you want the other non-cat muffler and re-tune carb for it while it's there.

Totally agree with cut for fun about retune carb I got a nearly new ms361 2004 model a few weeks back and was shocked at how lean the max rich setting for the saw was, or is but I manedged to riggle the limmeter cap out and to my great joy underneath it was a fully adjustable high speed screw Well with an egsauhst mod I have turned the high speed screw at least twice as far out and the saw is not! running too rich. I asume they are all set so lean to meet regulations to do with emmisions but they all seem a bit peaky to me and this can cause all sorts of problems. so i agree with cut for fun about getting a non cat egsauhst aswell. Good luck with the saw.

JMO, but I think saws are set up so lean to pass epa emissions. That also is a set up so lean to burn one up in short order IMO.

Ye that soynds about right. With the egsouhst mod you can save a little fuel by not having to be flat out aswell providing you can richen it up. so maybe dont run as clean but i wouldent say an egsauhst modded saw has to use more fuel cause you ve cut more wood and they normally ll take an 8 tooth rim sprocket to drive at least a 15" bar .325 that is but my 026 is .325. Set the ms361 with 16" bar 8 tooth rim sprocket 3/8" runs fine. You ll just have to see the power when its sorted then get right bar sprocket chain to maxemise what you ve got.

Mine was a bit rich when I got it (12,900rpm on the tach), so I leaned it a tad. | |

I received the saw back (fuel line issue). It was a no go on the non-cat muffler . I ran a couple of tanks through it on small stuff and decided to cut up a blow down from a couple of months ago (Hackberry). First 10 ft of the trunk is no less than 30". The 346 did fine (18" bar & still wearing the safety chain), overall I was impressed. The saw more than likely will never see a tree that size again, but it handled it fine. I was really impressed when I took the top cover off and found very little sawing dust/chips. I'm used to saws with 20yr old technology. |

jonnyy when you had the problem with the primer bulb/fuel line pressure. I had the problem once too. I dropped the saw on its side one day and one of the fuel lines popped off of the primer bulb housing nipple. Never had the problem again after installing some clamps. My 1 yr old 346 is well broke in now and the cutting speed is incredible for a 50cc saw. On the cat muffler issue I never saw a cat 346XP here in Canada. I take it your from the US [KS] so I see your problem. I quess we have more fresh air up here in Canada so a cat muffler is not so important. Willard |
