Hint here fellows - any cheap, preferably light weight, oil will work just fine. Here in Texas, we even use a 40 weight oil in the summer as a bar oil with no trouble. $15.99 buys a whole case of brand X ( 12 quarts or 3 gallons.) |

never thought of walmart. the bar (or BLADE oil hahaha) at autozone was $8. the battery on my dump died, and it took an hour to recharge so i had plenty of time to look around.

I thought I would revive this thread. I can buy a 20 liter [5 gal] pail of bar oil from my local grocery store for $20 , yep canola cooking oil . Have been running it since July and not only is the price fantastic but the stuff works like a charm and I'm now not scared to mix my work clothes with my kids laundry. ![]() Willard. |

Normally I buy Performance Plus bar, and chain oil. In April of 2008, I bought it for $6.99, for a 4 litre jug, at TCS. In Sept of 2008, the price went up $2.00, so I bought 10 jugs of Heavy, and 8 jugs of Light bar oil. This December, of this year, I picked up a couple 4 Litre jugs, for $10.99 at TSC's Moon lite Madness sale, regular price $12.99 per jug. The prices for bar, and chain oil, is getting way, way out of hand. Once I run out of Bar, and Chain oil, I'll be switching over to Canola oil as well, for my bar, and chain oil. I priced it at the grocery store, and for a 3.78 Litre jug, I can buy it for around $4.00. I hear that it stands up well in cold environments. If someone could elaborate on this, I'd be greatly appreciative. Thanks in advance. Bruce.

I depends how cold is cold Bruce. I doesn't start to thicken up until around minus -15 -20C but still pours with no problem. At minus -30 -35C it freezes solid into a white mass. At that temperature you have to be be careful if you leave your saw outside overnight with a full tank of canola oil, or you may have a damaged saw from the expansion. Just like if you forgot to put anti-freeze in your trucks cooling system....cracked engine block. I'm trying to find some kind of safe anti-freeze to add to the canola oil to keep it from freezing. Someone reading this may have an idea. Or maybe the "right idea" is don't take your saw outside in -35C weather. But we still have to worry about the fogotten saw left outside in these conditions. Willard. |

I have the best luck with jonsered bar chain oil at my dealer it is about 7.75 a gallon. I would rank it right up there with the sthil oil. The guy at the saw shop won't let the guys that he likes buy sthil oil too much money. he says put the savings into a new saw.

HolmenTree I picked up a used Solo 637 to replace a hot 200T I regretted selling to a tree guy in UP. I ask the guy what the heck was the stickiest stringiest sap I ever seen on this saw. It had the chain binding up ( had to run it in a dishwasher to free up the chain) and brake band around clutch drum and all areas wasnt working freely ( had to scrape off). He stated it was some kind of cooking oil used for bar oil that has been setting on the saw after setting for a year and a half after only a half hour or so of use. It was a awful mess to remove. Even had to use brake cleaner on the bar and it still gave up a fight. Do you notice this happening also? Think I will just stick to petrol oils. |

I heard some types of cooking oils are better then others in quality and canola is at the top. I shut my tree service down for the winter here because of our cold and short daylight hrs. So the oil freezing concern doesn't worry me. I was just looking out for the guys on here who live in cold climates like me and are trying out canola oil in their saws for bar oil. Willard. | |

Previous owner said. That wasnt sap, it was veggie oil after 1.5 years of sitting. Just so you know to clean them before storage if someone uses that stuff. |

| Another thing that the previous owner, could have used, was recycled vegetable oil, out of some deep fryers at a restaurant. That oil can be pretty sticky as well. I drained out my deep fryer a couple months ago, and boy, was that chit ever sticky, especially at the bottom of the fryer. Bruce.

Hello Y'all, I'm a long-time lurker and sponge of all the treemendas http://www.treeworld.info/images/smilies/laugh.gif (first and last pun, promise) advice that you very good sorts have offered on this awesome forum. Before I go any further, I feel compelled to disclose my incompetence, ignorance, and generally very amateur tree felling skills and experience. But I'm learning plenty while lurking. There is a crowd down the line in our South Island that cold presses their own Canola oil and I'm using that whenever I can escape my desk and bang my head against the few hundred pine trees I've been felling on my folks place up North. Been using Canola for months now without any problems. Now that I'm used to it, I'm going to switch back to regular chain bar lube for a few tanks and see what differences I can notice, if any. I just wanted to tender a sincere thank you to all the wonderful contributors on this message board who've given their time and expertise so freely. I'm learning every time I come to this site and/or get into the trees with my falling-to-pieces Poulan Pro 260 (Santa, if you're reading this, I've been a good boy this year and deserve/need a Dolmar PS 5100S, honest). I'm not sure how many lurkers there are but I just thought I'd stop lurking and acknowledge you all and wish you and yours the best for the holidays. Cheers Ears http://www.treeworld.info/images/smilies/thumbs.gif |

The cheapest place for bar oil in Melbourne Ive found is a small place called Gulf OIl (not the big company) he makes his own from castrol oil. He is located in Windsor Rd Croydon from memory, 20 Litres cost me about 60 bucks and he sells 44 gallon drums for $250 odd I think.
