Bore felled this nice White Ash and split it with my home made backhoe mounted splitter. Cutting this wood for next winter. ![]() ![]() I love to split and burn Ash of any species. Hope the EAB stays away, even though it's been found to the north of us in Missouri. Thanks for another fine import from China! This 36" dbh Red Oak was taken down by high winds when the water was up four or five feet on the trunk. Have to dig out the stump and buried part of the log next summer. First limb I went to cut off had a nice Cottonmouth Moccasin coiled up where the limb met the trunk! I imagined em' everywhere after that! (the sneaky little rat) Hurricane rains and high winds took down thousands of trees here in Arkansas (I'm a couple of hundred miles above New Orleans) and all across the south. I'm still trying to salvage wood from these often flooded bottoms. I had to get this Oak out asap since I plant this little field every fall and hunt here. The entire trunk was covered in poison Ivy. ![]() ![]() It was over 40 feet from grade to where this "Y" branched out the tree. Lots of good wood in just the limbs. Got most of it broken down now into 115kg cookies x 41cm. These sections were hauled on FEL and are 5 to 7 feet in length and weigh 1000-1500lbs. Bust these up into quarters with wedges and maul then grunt em' into the splitter.

The only Snakes, well Snake I have to worry is a Garter Snake. Every time I see one, my Heart jumps up into my Throat. . Growing up here on the Farm, when my Sister would see a Snake, she would let out this Godless Scream out of her, that would make the Hair on the Back of your Neck stand Straight. ![]() .When she was about 20, she seen a Snake, and went into the House, and got out my 22 Ruger Semi Automatic Rifle, and tried to Shoot the poor thing. After emptying the 10 Shot Clip, at the Snake, and the Snake was still alive, she resorted to her 12 Gauge Shot Gun, and blew that poor Snake to Bits. ![]() . Oh the Joys of having a Sister, with a Good Set Of Screaming Lungs. ![]() . Bruce.

Do you do anything about that poison ivy Clawmute? Stove would be ok but fireplace? You can catch it from the smoke I think. Even if you do not get it others might. I think you can get it inside your lungs too. I have had some cases that I probably should have gone to the hospital with. I'd probably take that wood to the dump. I am interested to know any strategies you might have. ![]() |

1. I've been dealing with poison Ivy/Oak/Sumac since I was a kid, and have been eaten alive with it more than once, even having one eye nearly swelled shut. I have a long handled rake I used to get the vines torn loose from the trunk. Also used to some extent a set of forks on my FEL to rake it from the trunk. After it was all torn loose (no hands on this!) I just pushed the vines into the woods. After that the wood is no problem. In the past I had a small sawmill and cut trees for it. Many of them were also covered in the nasty stuff. Despite wearing gloves, caps, long sleeved shirts and bib overalls I still got eaten alive. Many pro tree workers/loggers/foresters say that no matter the care taken they are always scratching a patch of it somewhere. The southern USA is covered in the stuff and certain other areas also. 2. I never burn any of these toxic vines, but try to handle them at a distance with long handled tools. A 3 or 4 pronged garden cultivator refitted with an extra long handle works for me. I've heard people say they weren't allergic to it, but they've just never gotten a really good exposure. If it's a big vine on a tree, I cut it at the base with an ax then pull it down with the tractor and/or a long handled tool. I never even touch the stuff with a gloved hand. Identification is primary. The very topmost vines in this particular tree turned out to be Virginia Creeper which is harmless and has five leaf pattern rather than the "leaves of three let it be". The 40ft. trunk however was the bad stuff.

Your succeptability to it can change with your metabolism over the years NG. My first bad case came at 17 when a beautiful blonde in a bikini and I were on a secluded pond climbing a willow with a vine, diving in the pond, we didn't know til later was PI. She was in the hospital for 3 days and I shoulda gone. You know even tho you scrape the vine off there is still the oil on the tree. I remember reading that it was found in the pyramids and the oil is still potent. Sometimes you just gotta tear into it on a job and the saw throws it right back into you. On a one hundred degree day, it is hard to stay completely covered all day. You just end up taking it. If you can take a long shower the minute you get home I think it limits it. |

I used to drive Transport Truck, and I met a guy out in Ogden Utah, at a Truck stop. He was telling me, when he was about 15, or 16, him, and his Best Friend, were walking along a Gravel Road. The heard a pick Up Truck Back Up, and turned to see Guys throwing big Stones into a Ditch. They went back to see what was going on. Then they both had their Hearts jump up into their Throats. The guys had Killed a Rattle Snake, that was over 16' long. I seen in a Museum, of a skin of a Rattler that was a little over 18' long. If those Snakes were around my Sister, she probably be looking for a Bazooka, instead of a Shot Gun. . Bruce.

I have no idea what was done with the snake. My wife ran over a rattler on our little country road in western Saline county she says was longer than the road was wide - and that's better than 12 feet! I was out of town so missed seeing the thing. When she first saw it she couldn't believe it was really a snake - like something from a movie. After it was ran over it wasn't even fazed and just took off into the woods. There are some Jim dandies out there yet!

I'm very allergic to Poison Ivy. In the Past I've tried just about every type of Cream, even Prescription Stuff. I always had to fight the Stuff for over a Week, in not 2 weeks. I was on eBay, last Spring, and I saw this Link, so I thought what the Heck, give it a try. The first time I got Poison Ivy last summer, I used it, and it was cleared up in 2 Days. The second Time, I got it, it lasted for 4 Days. The third Time I got Poison ivy, it lasted 6 Days. I learned to Wash with the Soap, very well. Wash about a couple of times after you rinse off after the First Wash, as you walk in the Door, from the Bush, and as soon as it starts to Itch, Wash Thoroughly again, and apply the Cream. The Second, and Third time I got Poison Ivy, I didn't Wash, like I did the First time I got Poison Ivy. I've provided a Link, to the Poison Ivy Stop Shop, where I got the Soap, and Salve from. This stuff really works, better than any of the Creams, that I've bought over the Years. One thing I hate about Poison Ivy, if you happen to take a Wizz out in the Bush, and you wined up with it Down Yonder, it is worse than Jock Itch. ![]() ![]() ![]() . Bruce.P.S. Here is the Link. http://cgi.ebay.ca/JEWELWEED-SALVE-SOAP-KIT-HEALS-POISON-IVY-IN-3-DAYSht_W0QQitemZ320234475835QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116 .

| A friend's daughter went camping, and being an unenlightened city dweller grabbed a handfull to use for outhouse stationery. The consequences were predictable.

Poison Ivy thoughts.... I'm not sensitive to it...I get asked frequently to clean trees of vines, fell infested trees...all the good stuff. People don't realize that that's not the end...what do you with it now??? Can't risk burning it on site...nobody but myself can use it for firewood...that's out as well since my wife can't even look at the stuff. So, there's a big ol' pile of wood and vines in a very secluded place...I torch it every now and again... Here's the kicker...don't get near my truck. Don't ask to borrow any of my saws...until I've blasted 'em at the car wash...a couple of times. I had a friend borrow my Silky pole saw from the garage without my knowledge...he calls a few days later...sick as heck...figures he got into something. I ask him, what do you think I use to cut vines outta' trees??? Let me add...you take your dog in the woods with you...wife greets dog upon your return...wife hates you for awhile... Stay away from the stuff guys...oils are potent after having dried on ANYTHING for twenty years...

What my Dad used to do, was take the Limbing Axe, and take a Chunk out of the Vein, and let it die on the Tree. After a while, it would just fall off the Tree, from Rot. I still do that while in the Bush cutting up Fire Wood. Even in the Winter, if I'm not careful, I can get Poison Ivy, because the Veins are still green, , and the Sap from the Viens, will get on you for sure. Bruce.

Think I'll use something else.I think I've seen song birds eat the white berries, which would explain the seed getting distributed all over as they fly around dropping a seed/fertilizer mix. I spray the leaves with roundup on a nice hot day. May take more than one spraying, but the leaves absorb it and it kills the roots. Gone permanently - till the next bird flies over. I think someone who is sensitive could die from breathing the smoke and oil that comes form burning it. I used to burn it but I'm not sensitive. Then I was warned of the danger and stopped, if not for me than for others. I actually read in a book on edible plants that if your started out in the early spring and ate the tiny three leaflets, and ate just a slightly bigger set each day, you could become immune to it. Don't try it, doesn't work. Ask me how I know. Now, that experience has made me wonder. Ever hear that if you pick up a skunk by its tail it can't spray? Anyone ever try that? | |

I don't know how true this is, but I was told if you pick a Skunk up, and tuck it's Tail between it's legs, it won't Spray. I have never tried it with my Hands, but have with the Upward Draft of a Semi Tractor Trailer a couple of times. Boy was I ever glad when I dropped the Trailer off. What a Stink. Bruce.

Nice to have a place where we can find out the true facts! I bet that skunk practical joke had been around for hundreds of years. Wonder if the Indians had that one first?American Indians had the same "jack in the pulpit" joke that we had in grammar school. Eat some and regret it for a long while. (Sharp pains in mouth.) A few years ago a nurse asked my opinion on some young girls who had formed "the poison berry club" where they would eat unknown berries. It was a big secret until they thought they were going to die, and no one knew what they'd eaten. I asked the girls how big was the plant? "This high". How many berries on the plant? "Three". I told them it was jack in the pulpit and they would be fine. |
