Default My latest woodworking project

Hi
Since I live in Australia and like woodworking, I made this

Downunder Clock
that goes backwards when the clock is sitting upright.
Cheers

I think it was supposed to say something like

I want to join the party,
but I am having some syntax problems.

How am I doing so far?

LOL

Good stuff Leif. I got a kick out of your "milling porcelain" picture.

You should have written something like this:

Jeg ønsker å være med på moroa, men jeg har noen problemer med setningbygging.

Milling porcelain was not fun. The trunk had nails too, but that wasn't so bad. Just sharpen, and go on further. Steel gives wood a black colour that may be beautiful in for example bowls.
The tree was standing in a farm yard, and previous owners had obviously found it convenient to use the tree as fence pole.

I have tried most of the types of wood that grow naturally in Norway, and a few imported types too. All of them may be used in some way or other. A few are really nice. I like the hard ones best. Perhaps I should make some pics another day when I have more time.
However, are we stiring up your Australian clock thread, Wolffie? Perhaps we should talk about bowls another place?
Leif.

It's a big job to make photos of wood suitable for turning. All sorts of wood have their own characteristics. But we can start with these two: Ash
and cherry.

This is the ash log with the ingrown insulator. The pattern of the growth rings is quite special, a bit twisted. There were nails inside too, that makes the wood black.
I expect this to become nice bowls, or plates. The slab is rather thin. Ash is very hard and heavy.

Piece of cherry. Also very hard, tough to mill. Cherry has fine grain and nice colours.

But which way do you shape the bowl? with the grain or against it? I don't get it.

Nice looking wood you got there though LeifR....
(and I mean that in the best way possible)

It will be both. This picture shows the grain direction.

When we shall turn a bowl, we cut out a circular shaped piece. Grain direction is horizontally. When turning, we'll work with the grain on the upper left quarter and the opposite one right under. Passed the middle, we work against in the upper right quart and the opposite one.

This is the best I can do just now. I'll make some pics later with a bowl in the lathe. Then is will perhaps be a bit clearer.
