You split all that by hand (axe)? Some of it is nice and red inside ... what is it? It's winter now there so how much do you go thru a month?

i split most with a maul . my wife uses the splitter when she splits , but i mostly can keep her buisy with stacking , she is a worker. the red looking stuff you see is cherry , oak, sometimes run into a walnut and maple . but we call maple goffer wood . put a piece in the stove and go fer another one . i only cut dead or fallen trees . i dont like to cut a healthy tree down for firewood , we had an ice storm here 3 years ago , and there are still trees down . we lost alot of nice cherry trees , and oaks , almost broke the tops out of all the maples. so there are plenty of trees down for firewood . here is a picture of my handle saver on my maul.

Your firewood pile looks a lot like mine, we even stack the same way. [4th pic]. I split all mine by hand, on weekends. I use a block buster, best ever firewood splitter, I'll get a picture tomorrow. |

Being in ctl Ohio, you should be getting dead ash from ash borer now or soon. Not one of my favorite woods (quick burn too, but easy split) but good underneath other stuff. What kind of add on furnace you got? I have a Clayton that is cooking right next to me right now. Used stoves for over 30 years and got this last year and could never go back with big firebox, hooked up to forced air to ducts and basement location and humidifier. I love it. Wondering why you don t have much unsplit stuff as mine will take an 11 inch by 28 inch and they last much longer than split stuff although I use plenty of splits too. Maybe send a picture of furnace setup? |

Hoot, looks like you're in a great location. Is the cherry you burn the type that produces fruit?

This is my block splitter, I've had it for 30 years come March. Can't believe it. I got the [unbreakable handle] about 12 years ago for about the same price as a wood handle, I prefer wood but it's not bad, averaged about 10-12 ton a year since then. Over 20 ton before that, mostly box, ironbark & grey gum, not much of that left around here now. I used the rubber protector on my wood handle, it doesn't fit this one. Your type of maul doesn't with our hardwood, but I like your welded on extra's. Never heard off flint knapping before, so looked it up and found out a lot about Ohio I didn't know, and this site flintknapping.com I might try the beer bottle axe, if I can find an empty bottle, |

yes it does produce a fruit , but not for humans , small and bitter to the taste . good for birds and animals . flint knapping is the making of stone tools . i make all my points for deer hunting . good luck in finding a beer bottle big enough for an axe,,

Those are some very very nice arrowheads, Hoot. It's a shame bowhunting is illegal here. That's the real hunting huh!!! I read about a guy who stalked a large goat on some mountain for 14 days before he could get a good shot with his bow. When the perfect shot was performed the goat fell in a ravine, so he had to walk two days again to go and get it. That's what I call hunting!!!!! But I couldn't shoot an animal though...Couldn't even kill a bunny if my life depended on it...On the other hand, I wouldn't care for a second about takin' a shot on a burglar. All I hunt is clay discs and large cartboard guys with pistols pointing at me, mate!! I had a brawl with a deer hunter a few years back. I went along with a hunting party and I was given a stick for rattling the bushes some 10 feet ahead of the hunters with the guns. I had to wear a stupid orange hat and jacket... Suddenly a deer jumped up and ran away from us and I remember thinking" Ow how cool is that!!!" but at the same time I heard the guy behind me cock his rifle... So I turned around and yelled that I'd slap him in the face with the stick if he took a shot. Well... He didn't...and the animal got away. But I was kinda banned from hunting parties from then on...As long as there is steak in our fridge, I guess I'm not on the hunt. |

any given night there will be at least 5 deer across the road from my house , and the field past it most nights in the 20 s . the corn field that has been picked doen the road will be full of deer . take your glass to the sink . the glass stands for the animal habitat , food cover and such . ( where they live and feed ) start poring water in the glass . when you get to the top its full . and what runs over are the animals we harvest . they will more than likley die from starvation anyways . i dont kill anything i dont use . deer and other wild animals are so much better than the tame animals we eat every day . like your beef . now a days they put the fat on them to make them weigh more . more weight = more money . a whitetail deer is a beautiful animal . i enjoy watching them almost as much as i enjoy eating them . hoot

Hey Hoot, nice looking spread you're on there, what are you farming? Your right about wild meat being better than the grain fed stuff, I can't believe you can just walk across the road and get yourself a deer. ![]() Very lucky indeed. Deer is just about impossible to hunt here, it's easier to go to the shops and buy some venison (but it's farm raised and doesn't taste as good) Nice arrowheads, looks like a lot of work went into them (wheres ya guns) ![]() Heres a couple of pics of our woodpile, pile on the right is for this year, pile on the left is for next year. Shovel at the front is in case i find "jon blake" hiding in the woodpile. ![]() Took these photos today, the rain is the first we have had since mid December. Cheers Simon ![]() ![]()

Nice set up Simon. Roof and all. I heated house entirely with wood this winter w furnace but my stuff is outside and if you slip and fall asleep w out covering and rain/snow gets it. it can mess you up for days. I like the big rounds, they burn nice and slow. What does everybody say in conjunction when hard piece comes up or tired of working or time for cocktails? (answer: "all nighter"}

The people who owned the house us before bred dogs. I just converted the kennels into my woodpile shed. Aint it great when you can have the fire going all winter and it don't cost you a cent. We're in the best job i reckon.

![]() You are indeed a lucky man Hoot. ![]() I like that you prefer the use of the bow, it shows more respect for your prey i reckon, plus it keeps your senses sharp. Much more skill in bow hunting, rather than just shooting something from 100 yards away.

I ve been burning woodstoves for decades but got hooked up with this couple of years ago. It is a wood add on furnace that puts heat in ducts and has a humidifier built in. It has a powerful fan that gets to whole house. It takes a 12 inch dia by 30 inch log thru the door and has a huge firebox. It is a labor of love filling it up and playing with it. It wasn t very expensive either.
