Default Log chair, "kubbestol".

We have an old tradition here in Norway, "kubbestol". A chair made from one piece of log. It has been, and still is, nearly a special sort of art. Often painted with our traditional "rose painting". We have several competitions where we can see chairs at an extremely high level.
I have never made one myself, so I borrow some pics.

Is this only a Norwegian tradition, or is it well known elsewhere in the world?

These chairs are all hollow. If not they would crack. And what housewife would be able to move them around when cleaning the house?
Perhaps it might be a business idea for someone "out there", making log chairs with a neat seat to open, and a bucket (wooden of course) inside?

A few years back cut 2 seats very similar to the kubbestol, one from blackwood wattle, another from sequoia. The blackwood log was already hollow, the sequoia wasn't bust lasted well. Both seats provided convenient seats next to the wood pile. Never thought of making them into indoor furniture.

Beautiful kubbestol! I've made crude versions of these. I guess it's the Norwegian blood in me. In the stools I made, I did not hollow out the middle. That, obviously is why they cracked. How did you do the hollowing? I may try making another stool from a yellow pine tree that I just cut down. There is quite a bit of sap in the yellow pine. Have you used sappy wood? Thanks.

Hello!
I have never made log chairs mysef, but as far as I know, the chair is cut roughly out with chainsaw when the log is fresh. It is important to hollow out the midle, if not it will crack, no doubt about that. Then it must dry slowly, in a basement or some other cool place. This is the same process as turning bowls from green wood. Some woodturners throw some wood chippings from the turning over the half finished bowl to slow down the drying. Wood needs time to shrink. I guess this method might be useful for chairs as well.
Perhaps you'll find some useful ideas about tools for the finishing work in my thread Burl to bowl.
From burl to bowl.

Leif.
