Hi, just wondering if anyone has any advice on double chainsaw powerhead setups. Do they cut quicker than a single powerhead? How does the starting of them go. I guess you need 2 x people unless you have set up the carbs with an adjusted cable on both to bring both on at the same time. Also do you adjust both powerheads to rev to the same RPM. What happens if one is producing more power than the other one. Do you adjust them both till they are the same RPM or will one power up or slow down to he other one. I am considering this option on milling African Mahogany but not sure on the results and expense of 2 x powerheads compared to 1 Thanks sun64 |

Just using to identical powerheads should work fine.

The only thing that I can think of is if one is tuned better and producing a higher RPM , wether they will equal out or one saw tends to do more work than the other one. I know this can be a problem when you have 2 outboards and one is not running the same as the one next to it. Be interesting if anyone has had any issues before with this set up. Technically you should have twice the power but wether it translates into a faster cutting speed? I guess it also comes down to chain speed as well Anyone have any answers to this set up sun64 |

Just get the rpms close during tuning and they will ballance out. And yes they are faster.

Thanks Rotax Robert, I had figured that. I have brought a tacho from baileys to tune both up . I am still in the process of gathering gear. What I intend to do is tune both saws while burying the saws in some hard wood. Hopefully this should get them as close as possible. I also plan on running 8 tooth sprockets an 2 x stihl 090's. sun64 |

Nice rig up sawchain, I was looking at the 66 inch GB bar, figured that would be enough for me and is cheaper than the 84 inch. How well do they go, are their any teathing problems etc that you could pass on. Are you running 7 tooth sprockets or have modified the wind vane govenor ? Regards sun64 |

Hi, they aren't mine, one of the locals owns the setup, my own setup is a pair of 880's on a 66" GB mill The 090's are running 7T spurs, don't think you will get 8T for 090, as far as I know only 7T spurs are available. Hi Laurie, Yes you can get 8 tooth rim sprockets. I have 2 x clutch drums for rim sprockets to suit the 090. I purchased from China these following rim sprockets. They look ok. I have used other before. Will see how long they last but they are not that expensive. 40 x 3/8 7 tooth rim sprockets 40 x 3/8 8 tooth rim sprockets 40 x .404 7 tooth rim sprockets 40 x .404 8 tooth rim sprockets With an 090 you have the power but not the chain speed. I am going to port and polish mine and modify the govenor with 8 tooth sprockets Like I said I am slowly gathering gear and I always have plenty to do at home. I am going to make a mill similar to a pro cut but with a series of pulleys on the end with a counter weight system to keep me out of the heat, fumes and sawdust flying about. It would be interesting to see what pricing you get for the 66 to 72 inch double ended bars and 50, 56 and 60 inch standard end long bars.I I have prices for them and they are not cheap. I had a double milling set up running 2x Makita 9010 on a 56" double ended Cannon bar. It worked a treat - but I made a mistake running them on a frame and on a hot day overheated one - causing a scored piston. But you don't have to worry about tuning etc - once they both are working in the wood both are trying to push the chain around. |
