City folks buy these bundles so they can watch the fire burn, they pay $6 a bundle to roast their dogs.

Just think how much money you have lost by just by taking your brush to the dump or wherever you take it. All of them little scraps could be making you money. Around here the gas stations and the markets sell these bundles.

I do have a model that comes apart and can be shipped UPS in two differant packages, $995 american plus freight.

Weights and measures here would bust your ass without a label and weight for each bundle, you need to be accurate.

My missus would burn that "Bundle" in an hour.
Even a ton only lasts a week when the heaters going flat out "roasting dogs".

Probably a stupid question but how much is a "cord" (weight equivalent) and why is it called a cord in the US of A.

Cheers

Tony

It would be impossable to say how much a cord would weigh as there are soft wood and hard woods also wet woods and dry woods which all have differant weights. A cord of wood is 4 feet X 4 feet X 8 feet. We don't sell by the cord, we sell by the rick which is 16" X 4 feet X 8 feet. The guys up North, the non hillbilly type who don't talk good sell by the cord. We hillbillies here in the midwest sell by the rick.

The wood business has been bad here as the weather has been warm. Another thing bad about the wood business is everybody is in the wood business as money is tight and lots of people are broke. We sell ricks for $45 and we see people selling it for $25 per rick.

Thanks, so as I can work out over here a "cord" = 3.5 cubic mts and a "rick"=14.5 cubic + or -mts if my math is correct. That can't be? If so no wonder why the have to bundle it in "gift packs" to make any money.

Red gum over here go's roughly 2.0-2.5 cubic mts to the ton (from memory some of the white ants out here may correct me if I'm wrong). Hardwoods range in price from $65-$150/mt depending on type, quanity required, season and whether its just beer money for someone or a livelyhood (it is getting dearer by the season thou).

How did the terminalogy of "cord" and "rick come about as a use of measurement?

Cheers

Tony

(How did the terminalogy of "cord" and "rick come about as a use of measurement?)

A cord of wood is 4' long, 4' high and 8'wide, the cord measurement has been around for years. A rick of wood is not a legal measurement but is 1/3 of a cord cut into 16" lenths. Its just a measurement that most everybody here in the midwest knows.

Au. must take their weights and measures serious. So far here in the US of A the feds have not took in the wood business. Why didn't that guy who got fined make his weights so low that there would never be a problem. No one would bitch about getting more weight than the package said.

The wood business has been made tuff to make much money by our government as you can't just load up a truck load and head out across the USA without the wood meeting the specs. The wood has to be over 1 year old, or no bark or kiln dried with papers to prove it. Then there is the bugs, you can't take Ash anywhere, I burn the ASh here at home for heat.

Ah, your maths is way wonky.

Best way to deal with these types of conversions is use the cubic foot then convert to cubic metre. Use an online tool there's many.

1 cord = 3.62m3

1 rick = 1.21m3

Seems firewood is very cheap in the USA at those prices. Here the going rate is around $100 m3 but really good all ironbark say would be $150 m3

It's always better to give a little more than less for sure. The issue is when you go commercial and sell via a network of Service Stations (Gas stations for Yanks) competitors who miss out on getting in dob you in.

LOL, my mistake I worked them in my head and rounded thus 3.5 for a cord and I failed to take into account that (16) was inches and instead did the conversion as (16ft) thus making a rick volume far more than a cord. My math is usually pretty good but my reading needs improvement.

Thanks for the education on the US measurements DaleDuBois. It seems tough especially when you add in the restrictions on product specs. Not much profit in it I'd reckon.

Cheers

We did about 50,000 bundles last year, got $2.25 per bundle wholesale to venders at 6 state parks. They sold them for $5.00 plus tax of 35 cents. we had a very big wood processor that would do 20 tons of logs every day. Lots of waste with small chips and etc. The only reason we made any money was the wood was free from a clearing job that I had going. We kept the Kiln going 24 hours a day. We fired it with the scrap wood. We sold the wood processor to a guy in Michigan who thought he would get rich doing bundles.

The only reason we took on the bundles was that excavating was slow and what excavating there was some contractors were working almost for nothing just to keep their people working. I did a few jobs, nothing big but I got good money for doing them. My son does water lines and repairs and his business was slow also. Things are looking better for this year, but no more bundles except a few for the local stores.
