A neighbor of mine has a band saw mill. He was looking for some Ash logs, for milling, for someone else to buy lumber from them so I took him some logs. Now here is the question. How has to pay for the milling. The supplier of the logs, that doesn't get the lumber, or does the price of the milling be added to the price of the lumber, that the other person is buying. My neighbour charged me $0.30 cents a board foot, for sawing the logs. Is that the way it is when a person get logs in from someone else, to sell lumber to another person, or did I get screwed in the ear. Your advice, and input is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Bruce.

Are you having a lend of us Bruce? The miller should pay the land owner for the log (royalty) and the transport of log to mill (sounds like you in both cases) and then pass that cost on to the customer/s. I've got some waterfront land you might be interested in. (sorry, location joke. Some years ago there was a scam going where they were selling land, on an island in our bay, that went underwater at high tide.)

Only diff is that now the salesmen will have a "legitamate" out...."Global warming, ice caps melted and what we offered for sale yesterday is now under water. Not our fault. Wait a few years and when we've cooled this place down you'll have twice as much land." sorry Bruce, I think your thread got Hijacked.

Yes Bruce what did you get? Sounds like you paid to give logs away. If you paid for milling I would assume you should get all proceeds from the sale of the timber sorry lumber.

I'm not sure I fully understand what your sayin Bruce but... I run a band mill and there are two ways I deal with incoming logs from others. A. Buy them for say 25 cents a Bd Ft or B. Saw on the Halves where I get half and the person who supplied the wood gets half the lumber if they help around the mill. |

So is the customer buying the logs from you, or the boards from him? I'd say sell the logs to him and wash your hands of it. Otherwise you're selling the boards to the client...so you figure in the price of milling and adjust your price up likewise to accomodate for it. I think you got "screwed in the ear" though. |
