Default Hardwood search in San Diego

I'm an apprentice wood carver in San Diego and I'm interested in obtaining local hardwoods from arborists, construction sites, firewood lots, etc. I'm trying to learn which hardwoods are prevalent out here that would be suitable for carving (red alder, for example?) and how to identify them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi and welcome to Tree World.
You might want to try and go into the Announcements forum, go into the Welcome thread, and post what you are looking for in hard wood in that area. A guy from Bakersfield, named Therrin, might be able to give you some ideas. He used to live around San Diego (I think), and he might be able to help you. Enjoy this good website. Bruce.

Thanks for the help, Bruce. Yes, I'm contacting a couple of arborists here in San Diego. I appreciate and respect your trade. I had a little taste of it on a farm in Ohio to know that it's difficult work and dangerous.
