I sent a friend this Link, and he was telling me, that his Dad worked on a Blasting Crew, when they were building a Road. He said, that one of the Guys, took a Stick of Dynamite apart, took out the Explosive Ingredients, Wrapped them up in Card Board, and hit it with a 20 LBS Sledge Hammer.
Well the Sledgehammer flew through the Air, and Landed right on top of the Boss's Brand New Pickup Truck, and left a heck of a Dent in the Middle of the Roof.
A little Later, they set off a Charge of Dynamite, and the Blast through a chunk of Rock, and it landed right where the Sledgehammer had landed earlier. . Nobody had to explain aboutr the Dent caused by the Sledghammer. . Bruce.

There once was an item called a powder wedge, you drove it into the wood
added a certain amount of black powder through a small hole, lite a fuse and
run like hell. The wedge was hinged and would fly apart thus splitting the wood. I wouldn`t think anyone uses this wedge any more,it`s too dangerous.
but to return to the question posed, I have a 22 ton hydraulic wood splitter
that has not seen a piece of wood it couldn`t split or shear through.

used to use one of these back in the 60's to clear land in Kenthurst on the outskirts of Sydney - the one we used use to send the explosive effects into the log via an opening in the wedge end (did not split open) - was real fun to use
