I think the best I've used is dry almond, burns real hot. Hard to come by these days though. All of my wood I burn anymore is oak.

Around here the best wood is Oak, Hickory, Locust, Elm and Cherry. I'm going through about a cord of Black Walnut now. It burns ok but leaves more ash than Oak. The smoke from BW smells like pipe smoke. I burn a bunch of Box Elder in the fall and spring when I don't need all the BTU's. I burn some mature Scotch Pine too. It burns much better than most pines, firs, spruce. I gave the neighbor over 2 cords of SC because he was low on wood this year. He has 2 OWB's and goes through quite a bit of wood. He was surprised at how well the SC was doing. I don't burn White Pine at all because it burns wild and sooty. I never burn wet or green wood. You lose too much energy boiling the water out of the wood and it smells bad.
