I think the best I've used is dry almond, burns real hot. Hard to come by these days though. All of my wood I burn anymore is oak.

In my area hedge is tops. We also call it Osage orange and cow fruit but I think most people throughout our country call it hedge. I've been told its a cousin of the mulberry tree and has nasty thorns (which is why it was used as a hedge row or fence in the days before barbed wire). I love to burn it but don't come across it too often. It's also prized as wood for making bows and is also known as bodark which slang from the French bois d' arc. Sorry bout that - it's a cool looking tree with neat fruit and good btu output. We also use red, white and pin oaks as well as hickory for the hot overnight fires.

Around here the best wood is Oak, Hickory, Locust, Elm and Cherry. I'm going through about a cord of Black Walnut now. It burns ok but leaves more ash than Oak. The smoke from BW smells like pipe smoke.

I burn a bunch of Box Elder in the fall and spring when I don't need all the BTU's. I burn some mature Scotch Pine too. It burns much better than most pines, firs, spruce. I gave the neighbor over 2 cords of SC because he was low on wood this year. He has 2 OWB's and goes through quite a bit of wood. He was surprised at how well the SC was doing.

I don't burn White Pine at all because it burns wild and sooty. I never burn wet or green wood. You lose too much energy boiling the water out of the wood and it smells bad.
