It's going fine. It is taking me a bit of time to figure out where the various forums or threads are; I don't see a "Table of Contents" but I'll figure it out. I'm mostly just wanting to learn about trees for my yard, a small front and back yard in an old suburban subdivision near Los Angeles. I want to break up my small lawn by planting two trees in it, but I don't know what kind. Lots of folks here plant palm trees, but I want something more like a crepe myrtle or jacaranda. I want to upload a pic of my yard so you can see what I need.

I haven't yet figured out where the menu of threads is, so I'm still a bit lost. And to post a picture from my hard drive, "insert image" asks for a URL, so that won't work. I guess I'll just have to spend some time figuring this thing out, but I've been really busy lately. A big nursery under the Edison electric high tension towers by the 605 freeway just east of L.A. is having a big sale, so we went and bought some stuff even though it's pretty much guesswork at this point. We bought a small, 15 gallon crape myrtle but we're not even sure if it goes in the front yard or back yard yet. I want two trees in my small front lawn but my wife thinks just one would be better. We already have one old tree in the sidewalk easement that the county owns. I want to show you all a picture. Anyway we can get a 24 inch box tipu for $140 USD so we are probably going to go with that for the front yard. Is there a thread for homeowners landscaping their yards?

Things are great. Lately I have gotten the "green bug." Since recently purchasing my first house, ive been planting flowers, tomatoes, peppers, strawberry's, cantolope, and a Apple Pear tree that my mom grew for me off of her tree ( she grabed a branch that was growing at the base of the trunk bent it into a pot and it rooted itself, i planted it about 1 month after she cut it off the tree, and its doing great now.) And the latest is a magnolia tree i planted yesterday. Its nice having a little garden. I have also been experimenting with renewable energy, solar panels, lots of fun. I seem to be spending a lot of time researching eco friendly projects. ( recycled materials and such) I especially get into it when i have 2 cups of black coffee in the morning like today... Anyways thanks for all the great information, I only hope to learn as much as possible about trees, hey it might turn into a career of some sort one day. OZZY B |

Not so well. I planted many oaks around my fence line. I live in 12 acres. I had placed a plastic around the 2" trunks to protect them from the deer craking them with their antlers but all of a sudden they started dying. I checked and it seems that the plastic has caused some rot?decay? wounds? in the trunks that are now infested with something, as I see tiny holes. I want to save them, what can I do to help them heal and remove pests? Not only did I invest a lot of money but care deeply about their survival. It seems that I ignorantly hurt them with the plastic as we suffered here a drought and intense high temperatures this summer! Any help is appreciated and thank you for having this kind of chat rooms for people like me that don't know a thing about trees and their sicknesses. |

Hi, Eric Let me guess, you post one welcome thread, then when someone new arrives you edit the original post with the new name and you look like a fortune teller right? As for me I'm doing fine, I'm a welder by trade and I do cut all my own firewood, so am always on the lookout for safe ways of handling trees in tight or at least less than perfect conditions. With the price of everything going sky high, I usually buy most of my saws and tools at flea markets. My pet project at the moment is a Homelite 5-20 gear drive saw. This looks like a real cool site. I've already gotten a couple of good ideas from it. |

This sounds like a previous poster under a different name. Maybe I am wrong. Something about that post just don't sit right. Jeff |

I hope that last post wasn't directed at me. If it was I can assure you I just found this site by accident about two days ago while I was researching chainsaw parts. I certainly had no intention of offending anyone, and if I did please accept my apologies.
