So she works nights while I stay here, can be a hand full with homework, dinner, baths and this forum. LOL

These are the things we dont talk about though. Dont know why, maybe a man thing, but it's good to see the human side.

Anyway, I'm extremely happy to see such a diverse and sensible community on line. We have very good people here ... not because I booted the bad but because of the way we all conduct ourselves. You would feel so bad to come in and mess the place up with stupid stuff, because it's just not like that here.

It can be difficult (is for me) not to challenge an opinion, some-one might want to save trees whilst others get paid for felling them etc. Such is life, it's never all one way. Tolerance is a tough task at times. And if you are challenged don't try to take it personally, see, if I were a lawyer in court and you were trying to argue about the value of a tree to me I would pull out 15 different valuations and show the judge and jury what a cowboy industry you are in. I would do that, and that's how I think, and that is what happens unless you have a dumb lawyer. So you can retaliate by calling me names or by seeing the flaws and addressing them so the industries credibility is raised. Insurance companies work on market value for cars etc, they sing from a common hymn sheet, but we do not.

Behind the scenes we are looking at taking a few big steps this year. I wont let the cat out of the bag but can say Tree World and it's members is simply not getting the respect it rightfully deserves so some work will happen in that area as well as getting some loyal sponsors and deals for members.

Anyway, good to read you all, and the thread has taken off big time, and you're all safe and happy.

What do you think onechip. Are you happy with the way the place is run? Suggest any changes?
I love it here Ekka,i wouldn't change a thing. I've been feeling a little down lately. My family only live around the corner, yet feel so far away. It was my weekend with my daughter this weekend, she is 7 yrs. But she didn't want to see me or talk to me and idon't know why. So thanks for inviting me back, it is overwhelming to feel apart of something so great!

Sorry to hear about your Dad, loppa.

Sorry to hear that. These things are tough on kids ... also could be that they have their routine changed etc.

Have fun with her and she'll come round I'm sure.

Since you started this thread with me, I suppose I should answer. It is cold enough you better bring in your brass monkey if you know what I mean!! Only about -20F, but the wind is about 40 mph. Since they were talking blizzard warnings and suggested no travel, I had to go 80 miles to Minot to trade cars today. Got one of those Prius' from Toyota. Have a couple of friends who really speak highly of them, so thought what the heck, they cost less than my house did so I'll give it a try. alopa, I know the feeling, my dad passed away at 87 on January 12th, it was and wasn't a surprise. I had seen him at Christmas, but he was not in the best of spirits due to health and the loss of some friends. He was ready. Not a whole lot of tree work going on now, people don't get out and notice it. Will probably help 2 or three associates this summer on some of their trickier projects, they have youth, but don't trust their experience yet. It will come. School is going good. Recruiting more people to the industry is always a problem. If you know of anyone who would like to invest a year or two, depending on the degree, in a good arboricultural education (in my opinion), you might have them drop me a message. With the dollar like it is now, I think it is a good bargain for Canadians and others around the world. Son is in Hawaii tonight, so the weather is a little longer, daughter gets married in March, and grand daughters are getting more mobile and busy.
Hope this finds you all well.

Well what a surprize to get so much attention on a personal thread. Thanks! I wrote a long reply friday and somehow it went away. Anyhow. It's starting to get warm around here pretty soon we will be complaining about the heat and lack of rain.
Atlanta area as planning on closing all the pools to save water they have about 3 years in a row of serious lack of rain. So, some people pool maintenence guys, gardeners and including tree workers are in bad shape for the lack of rain. Some of the native trees are just dying out!
They do not even serve water at restaurants unless you ask for it!

Not a big drinker at my age. I had my share in college 20 plus yeras back (drinking daily almost) I do not know how we did not became alcoholics! auch!

I have a beer or mixed drink sometimes but not that often.
Well after seeing all the photos of the young kids I realized that I am fairly old compared to you guys. My "kids" are Daniel 29y/o working part time as a Computer geek and still going to college and Laura 26 y/o an Electrical Engineer for a large British Co (BAE Systems). She is the smart one in the family- Thank god! I am thinking of retiring in a couple of years but not sure yet. Investments in the market are not doing so well these days specially with the dollar going down in value and oil going thru the roof. It must affect you guys a lot more because all the gear that you have to operate daily and I think you have higher taxes added to the oil price.

I got on line last night on the chat room and it works pretty well. There were a couple of guys there talking but i was too tired and hit the sack earlier than usual.

Great temps today (Saturday) in the mid 70's low 80's

You raised an interesting point Bob, that is the reluctance of people in the industry to train/learn for themselves.

Having interacted with many tree people I have had some of the 3 years+ in the industry react with "F@*k that" response to training. Coz they can climb and cut that's it for them.

No doubt there are many good self taught climbers however a little plant/soil/OHS/business knowledge wont hurt. I find it amusing, I did an apprenticeship with 2.5 years of college and 4 years on the job to be a tradesman, "F@*k that" wasn't an option but right here today I would say 80% cutting trees have zero qualification. Hence the reason why we see shit like this.

QBuild at it again in Bundaberg?

Logan City Council please explain! I wonder if there were casualties?

More BCC hatracking

Exposing another shame file

People should be beating down your door for training!

glad to here you got some rain. i know you need more tho.
funny you should mention lottery tics. i just cashed in $80 the other day. not bad for a two dollar investment.

Tilia, have a go at some of these to build a basic understanding of Mistletoes in general and the Australian species....

Focussed soley on USA Dwarf Mistletoes...but absolutely great depth and detail unmatched elsewhere!!

Dwarf Mistletoes: Biology, Pathology, and Systematics

USFD information site very good quality

RMRS - Rocky Mountain Research Station

USA based site with very comprehensive and indepth info about not just mistletoes but almost all other parasitic plants!!

The Parasitic Plant Connection

Another great site....UK europe focus but excellent quality of info

Mistletoe Pages: Homepage

NSW/Oz info basic

Mistletoe

Do you really need more??????

If so I have some pdf's and papers that might be of interest.

Hi Ekka,
Always good to hear from you! Things are fine here, in our new home in Wyoming. Glad to hear you've had some much needed rain in the land down-under. Good to hear about your kids, as well. They sure are "cute" little buggers!

Looks like your site continues to grow. I see you've got a few sponsors like Sherrill Tree. I've ordered a lot of stuff from them through the years. Toby Sherrill sure does run a top-notch company! Can you get stuff from them there in Australia? Maybe they should open up an Australian Branch for tree care enthusiasts there, eh?

I'm thinking of getting into it (professional tree care), again, around springtime. Currently, I've been working my tail off on my new educational assignment at the local middle school (ages 11-14). There should be plenty of work here to ease back into tree surgery part-time. It's in my blood, what can I say? I love the smell of chain saw gas in the morning!

Keep up the good work! I'll never forget the wonderful hospitality your family extended to me while I was in Australia. You made me feel as "one of the family".

All of the best!

Hey Mike, great to see you.

Just remember your age and retirement coz tree work is tough work!

Dont know if you if it snows and stuff but hat could slow things down too.

Some day we'll catch up again, still only feels like yesterday you were here, we slayed some palms for sure.

Catch you around.

we're not really underground all day. what we do is install underground duct work for cables, repair manholes, replace manhole roofs, install risers on poles, buld substations, that sort of thing. we also are a very diverse department and assist other departments. thats why we were putting up house services the other day after the storm.
about nine or ten yrs ago the company had an intern program for the tree dept. so i thought i would try it and i liked it. when a job opend up in the tree dept i bid on it and got the job. i joined isa and bought about $2000 worth of training matrls. (its not hard to spend that kind of money with them). that plus ojt i learned a lot. its funny but you never know all in this busness. thats what i like about it. by the way this 30 sec. thing has to go

I have always worked with trees in some form or another . It is really about the only kind of work have done . Even when I worked in factory for a winter it was veneer factory. I started working at a nursery when I was 15 worked there for 5 not just a get bunch trees and in the spring and sell them .We had actually growing on grounds . I worked there repotting ,loading trees , planting tree in the field than I start working on a installation crew for same company . After that I worked for another installation crew for 6 years . Through out the years I have been teaching myself climbing and that type of stuff .

hey Mr. Ekka really like the thread, and just for me to eh,,weather here is snowy and cold right now its -8F and the wind coming off Lake Superior is, well bone chilling tonight January snow fall this year was 86 inches and the snow total here to jan 30 is 208 inches but we have gotten well over a foot since then.
Rairly bye lottery ticket's have enough Indian casino's where I live......(I just throw a few bucks out my truck window as I drive bye them, Its a hell of allot quicker that way, and I don't even have to get out of the truck.) Winter here so times are very slow with any tree work,I do do some logging on the side during this off season, O and I also tend to drink my self silly some.... days, Its easy to do as the shack happiness starts to set in. tonight it is Old Milwaukee and home made lemon chello, at least that's what I think it is....homemade shit ya Know! I'm starting to think they sold this stuff as a cure all remedy in the olden days. Ill hafta refer back to an old post here and add the recepe. A friend gave me a couple mason jars of it, I like it!!
I think Your sight is great,I realy enjoy coming in here and reading the posts, as a man of few words I guess i don't post to much. Plus its allot easier to use the mouse and read than fiddle around with that damn keyboard!...
Keep up the great work Mr. Ekka. I'm sure as great as my thread is going Ill be back again to comment!

hey ekka. sorry i havent replied. been busy adjusting to the new enviroment. bigger trees, long hours, and so much rain i forget what the sun looks like. other than that it s been a wicked experience. we drove from the eaast coast to the west coast in 2.5 days...pretty much non stop. the deal at the new gig didnt pan out to be what i was told but we decided to make the most of it and dig in for a while. were going to work here for a bit and then probably move on to another part of the country, preferably somewhere warmer where i can see the sun again.
my brother and i are going to attemp some steel head fishing in a week or two. tomorrow we re going to the ocean and then to the olympic mountain range. its our day off. right now were working outside the cascade mountain range. eagles ,hawks, duck, elk and tons more wildlife everywhere.
most of the work is from the comfort of a bucket. im afraid its going to make me soft so i joined a gym. mostly using the sauna to loosen up. we just got our internet hooked up last week so my on line time has been next to none. ive got some neat pics ill post shortly.
hope everyone here has been doing well. thanks for the thread eric.
