Greetings from the north coast of California. We have had 35 inches of rain since July 1st, about 6 inches less than normal. the snowpack is above normal so stream levels should be good this coming summer, unless we get warm rain at high elevations. Things as they are, we could get some spring flooding. Today was fairly nice, took the time to warm up one of my old Macs on a blown down cypress, always good to hear a well tuned reed valve. We have people who have had droughts to floods to snow so thick you cant see or walk, to people who've had the best years and worst years. For those who've had it tough or copped a raw deal, suffered a loss I really understand (condolences a_lopa), a few years back I lost my father too, mum had a serious operation recently, the 17yo cat's ready to cark it next and the kids went off to school whilst work dried up so bad here with the drought and stuff my wife grabbed another job to pay the bills. So she works nights while I stay here, can be a hand full with homework, dinner, baths and this forum. LOL ![]() These are the things we dont talk about though. Dont know why, maybe a man thing, but it's good to see the human side. ![]() Anyway, I'm extremely happy to see such a diverse and sensible community on line. We have very good people here ... not because I booted the bad but because of the way we all conduct ourselves. You would feel so bad to come in and mess the place up with stupid stuff, because it's just not like that here. It can be difficult (is for me) not to challenge an opinion, some-one might want to save trees whilst others get paid for felling them etc. Such is life, it's never all one way. Tolerance is a tough task at times. And if you are challenged don't try to take it personally, see, if I were a lawyer in court and you were trying to argue about the value of a tree to me I would pull out 15 different valuations and show the judge and jury what a cowboy industry you are in. I would do that, and that's how I think, and that is what happens unless you have a dumb lawyer. So you can retaliate by calling me names or by seeing the flaws and addressing them so the industries credibility is raised. Insurance companies work on market value for cars etc, they sing from a common hymn sheet, but we do not. ![]() Behind the scenes we are looking at taking a few big steps this year. I wont let the cat out of the bag but can say Tree World and it's members is simply not getting the respect it rightfully deserves so some work will happen in that area as well as getting some loyal sponsors and deals for members. Anyway, good to read you all, and the thread has taken off big time, and you're all safe and happy. ![]() What do you think Unregistered. Are you happy with the way the place is run? Suggest any changes?

Hi guys... Well things are goin' great for us at the moment. I don't wanna brag about it, but we won a contract for yearly maintenance and follow up on 228 BIG trees in a park. And maybe, just maybe, there's another one on the table for another 1300.We started on it yesterday and drew up a plan for things. We even threw in an emergency service number especially for them. So from now on, big clients (little ones too but hey, gotta do something extra for the big guys) can call us 24/24 and 7on 7 when catastrophic events due to storms and or other things are at hand. They seem to appreciate it a lot. 2008 will be a big year professionaly as well as personal. We're looking to buy a house at the end of the year, and in the meantime, I have decided to investigate the possibility to buy a new specialised tree truck in the US. This is a real milestone for us... Regarding the weather it's not so bad. We had storms early this week and working in trees was difficult if not impossible. |

Hi all, and thanks for your input. Special thanks to Ekka for the personal invitations. a_lopa, sorry to hear of your loss, I hope you are all dealing with it ok. My Dad is 79 and still going strong, pitching roofs and doing the odd tree, he reckons he's going to wear out, not rust out. He lives in the country at Kangaroo Valley and we take him logs which he cuts and splits himself for firewood. He's old school and a bit mad, I think. I have 3 grown daughters, 28, 26 and 21 yo, and 2 1/2 year old grandson Alex, another grandson on the way May 28th. Alex featured in Treeworld as a champion catcher of Flathead previously! Alex is fortunate enough to have 2 parents, 4 grandparents, 3 great granparents, 2 aunts and 3 uncles, all of which think he's the best thing since edible undies. (am I allowed to say that?) As most here know, we have had heaps of rain for 2 weeks, and more coming, which has stuffed up work programmes, 2 big jobs postponed until sites dry out. One is a whole weeks work pruning at a Uni, top job when we can get to it. I just got in from a council job, split Euc Botryoides to take down. Missed the rain luckily, although getting used to working in it. I don't mind the weather stuffing up the work so much, but it ruins the FISHING! Ekka, I'll get a lottery ticket. If it wins we'll use the proceeds to promote Treeworld, even if it's only caps and T shirts. Cheers, Steve

G'day Ekka and all at Treeworld!!! Sorry for the delayed reply. 2008 has started well for me and family. Work is on. Nothing silly but enough to keep going. Its good being a "little guy" sometimes as the big boys certainly dont like the technical rigging in bad access areas....All good for me. 3 kids, 6, 4, 8mths. 1 off to yr 1, 1 to preschool 2 day and 1 at hm with mum. Had good time off over chrissy and spend alot of time with the kids...which I've missed the last couple of years. This year.....just plan to put in a good years work, pay the mortgage off a bit, but spend time with family. Hopefully spend time on forum a bit more too!!!! Good luck to all in Oz and around the world!!! Have a lager with you one day...my pic......anything COLD!!! Stay safe |

I can't really think of any. I have noticed a bit of a tendency from some North American contributors to "put down" their trees. Perhaps their image of their industry is as necessary tree destroyers rather than conservers. That's not a criticism; it could just the way they perceive their industry. |

Here it is a bit busy at the moment. Most of you know me already but for those who don't here is the short version story. I am a farm slave that broke down and was not able to do my job anymore so I was climbing the walls here and needed some brain gymnastic's. About 4 years ago I started fiddling with some saws I had for firewood. Once they were done I looked for more as this was something I could do. I found some old bears and got in to these in a serius way. The collection today is about 500 saws, 350 more for parts and trade saws. I started up Dolmar dealership this 1 January after some years fighting with insurance legal and disabuilety stuff. This is now going and I am currently starting canpain to get some good solid coustemers. I have limetid capasety that i tend to exeed all the time wish reasoults in more then needed bedtime. That is were the computer dop it's work. Keeps me busy and safe. The collectors forum is the joy of my life were I get to have company of simular guy's. I will check in here soon again and give yoyu a bit more on this. |

You are right-- I have been remiss in posting. had some heart surgery Dec'07-- this in combination with a hip replacement March'07 has pretty much nudged me away from the climbing end of of the biz for the last several months. Am currently exploring alternate ways to stay connected to the industry while de-emphasising the 'climber' thing which has been the bread and butter for the last 30yrs. Am contemplating actually obtaining a TCIA certification in order to promote myself to my client base as a (piad) tree consultant and (or) trying to hook-up with a large established tree company in a sales/safety/supervisory position. Other than that I pretty much spend time making Sidekicks for Bailey's and Wesspur as well asa working on an idea of mine to repel deer from cultured landscapes and residential gardens. Gotta go now-- will try not to be a stranger. Thanks for thinking of me and keep those kangaroos down under in line. Tim | |

well i better respond since my "name" is up there. I live near old dude and tried to send some work his way once but he said he was too old. Depressing part is, I'm younger than he! Hope the ticker gets goin for ya. Always figured the lottery was a tax on dumb people, but if they win that theory might have to go. ![]() Kid is 18 and works with me when not in class. Nephew is 19 and more like arbo material. Stepsons 16 and 14 and decent company. It's my Year of Writing Dangerously--in 5 different natl pubs this month. not done yet. Going to treevet's state OH tomorrow to spread some heresy; hope he gets off the can long enough to make the trip. OK now back to managing Decay and Risk ppt. http://www.ohiochapterisa.org/conferenceGrid.pdf I visit 3 sites in the usa but this one has got em knocked. |

| Yes, why not? Lottery's supply well meaning charities with a valuable source of income. They also allow people with very little money to spend it on something meaningless as it gives them an enourmous sense of well being, dontya think? |

Hi Ekka, Took me a few minutes to figure this out, a "personal" thread for everyone, very clever! Thanks for the great site. The weather here......... -30?c but that's par for the course in February. Sure like the heated grips & carb on my saw. Work: I've been doing wildland urban interface fuel reduction contracts ( thin, pile & burn) but now I'm branching out and looking for a chipper and chip truck to fill in the down time between contracts.Any leads? Anywhere in the western half of Canada or the US would be worth considering as I'm in Alberta. I think a Bandit 90 would be about the smallest I'd go. As for kids, I have just one and he looks just like me ![]() Thanks for any help. Phased1 |

G'day Ekka, Long time listener, first time caller. I've been working as a groundie for a few years now, just starting to get into climbing now. Been following the forums for a while absorbing the knowledge that's being shared. Thanks to everybody, I've learned some primo stuff that's shortened my learning curve. |
