Sorry to hear that. These things are tough on kids ... also could be that they have their routine changed etc.

Have fun with her and she'll come round I'm sure.

Since you started this thread with me, I suppose I should answer. It is cold enough you better bring in your brass monkey if you know what I mean!! Only about -20F, but the wind is about 40 mph. Since they were talking blizzard warnings and suggested no travel, I had to go 80 miles to Minot to trade cars today. Got one of those Prius' from Toyota. Have a couple of friends who really speak highly of them, so thought what the heck, they cost less than my house did so I'll give it a try. alopa, I know the feeling, my dad passed away at 87 on January 12th, it was and wasn't a surprise. I had seen him at Christmas, but he was not in the best of spirits due to health and the loss of some friends. He was ready. Not a whole lot of tree work going on now, people don't get out and notice it. Will probably help 2 or three associates this summer on some of their trickier projects, they have youth, but don't trust their experience yet. It will come. School is going good. Recruiting more people to the industry is always a problem. If you know of anyone who would like to invest a year or two, depending on the degree, in a good arboricultural education (in my opinion), you might have them drop me a message. With the dollar like it is now, I think it is a good bargain for Canadians and others around the world. Son is in Hawaii tonight, so the weather is a little longer, daughter gets married in March, and grand daughters are getting more mobile and busy.
Hope this finds you all well.

Well what a surprize to get so much attention on a personal thread. Thanks! I wrote a long reply friday and somehow it went away. Anyhow. It's starting to get warm around here pretty soon we will be complaining about the heat and lack of rain.
Atlanta area as planning on closing all the pools to save water they have about 3 years in a row of serious lack of rain. So, some people pool maintenence guys, gardeners and including tree workers are in bad shape for the lack of rain. Some of the native trees are just dying out!
They do not even serve water at restaurants unless you ask for it!

Not a big drinker at my age. I had my share in college 20 plus yeras back (drinking daily almost) I do not know how we did not became alcoholics! auch!

I have a beer or mixed drink sometimes but not that often.
Well after seeing all the photos of the young kids I realized that I am fairly old compared to you guys. My "kids" are Daniel 29y/o working part time as a Computer geek and still going to college and Laura 26 y/o an Electrical Engineer for a large British Co (BAE Systems). She is the smart one in the family- Thank god! I am thinking of retiring in a couple of years but not sure yet. Investments in the market are not doing so well these days specially with the dollar going down in value and oil going thru the roof. It must affect you guys a lot more because all the gear that you have to operate daily and I think you have higher taxes added to the oil price.

I got on line last night on the chat room and it works pretty well. There were a couple of guys there talking but i was too tired and hit the sack earlier than usual.

Great temps today (Saturday) in the mid 70's low 80's

You raised an interesting point Bob, that is the reluctance of people in the industry to train/learn for themselves.

Having interacted with many tree people I have had some of the 3 years+ in the industry react with "F@*k that" response to training. Coz they can climb and cut that's it for them.

No doubt there are many good self taught climbers however a little plant/soil/OHS/business knowledge wont hurt. I find it amusing, I did an apprenticeship with 2.5 years of college and 4 years on the job to be a tradesman, "F@*k that" wasn't an option but right here today I would say 80% cutting trees have zero qualification. Hence the reason why we see shit like this.

QBuild at it again in Bundaberg?

Logan City Council please explain! I wonder if there were casualties?

People should be beating down your door for training!

Tilia, have a go at some of these to build a basic understanding of Mistletoes in general and the Australian species....

Focussed soley on USA Dwarf Mistletoes...but absolutely great depth and detail unmatched elsewhere!!

Dwarf Mistletoes: Biology, Pathology, and Systematics

USFD information site very good quality

RMRS - Rocky Mountain Research Station

USA based site with very comprehensive and indepth info about not just mistletoes but almost all other parasitic plants!!

The Parasitic Plant Connection

Another great site....UK europe focus but excellent quality of info

Mistletoe Pages: Homepage

NSW/Oz info basic

Mistletoe

Do you really need more??????

If so I have some pdf's and papers that might be of interest.

Hi Ekka,
Always good to hear from you! Things are fine here, in our new home in Wyoming. Glad to hear you've had some much needed rain in the land down-under. Good to hear about your kids, as well. They sure are "cute" little buggers!

Looks like your site continues to grow. I see you've got a few sponsors like Sherrill Tree. I've ordered a lot of stuff from them through the years. Toby Sherrill sure does run a top-notch company! Can you get stuff from them there in Australia? Maybe they should open up an Australian Branch for tree care enthusiasts there, eh?

I'm thinking of getting into it (professional tree care), again, around springtime. Currently, I've been working my tail off on my new educational assignment at the local middle school (ages 11-14). There should be plenty of work here to ease back into tree surgery part-time. It's in my blood, what can I say? I love the smell of chain saw gas in the morning!

Keep up the good work! I'll never forget the wonderful hospitality your family extended to me while I was in Australia. You made me feel as "one of the family".

All of the best!
