Default Where's The Whistle Blowers Gone?

You know, over the past few years I've noticed a tendency developing.

It's the shut ya mouth and turn a blind eye tendency.

In Qld we had Dr Death who soon will be brought back from hiding in USA to face charges but the whole lot was hushed up.

Then we have the Butcher from Bega cutting female genitalia up, some nut cased doctor, do the search and you'll see, even videos of the victims TV interviews. The AMA involved in a cover up.

And now hot in is this SA report that their foster child system houses sophisticated pedophile networks!

Pedophiles hurt foster children: report - Breaking News - National - Breaking News

Quote:
Pedophiles hurt foster children: report

April 1, 2008 - 6:45PM

Priests, doctors and teachers sexually abused foster children amid pedophile networks representing a "foul undercurrent" of South Australian society, an inquiry has found.
In this thread here you can see what happened to a whistle blower.

Pedophile Minister Milton Orkopoulos whistle blower sacked

So, what is going on? Why is this culture developing? That's the culture of blowing the whistle or exposing some pretty bad stuff being bad, you are the "dobber". We aint talking about smoking in a non smoking area here but in some instances fatal encounters.

Seems when a system looks after it's own, like Dr's looking after Dr's or Lawyers looking after Lawyers etc that cover ups and silencing victims occurs.

FEAR!

People these days are too frightened of what they have to lose!
Instead of doing the right thing, they turn a blind eye because they don't want to get involved.
They are frightened they might lose money, time or reputation.
Sad really.

Shea,
Compared to what? Politicians? Teachers? Day Laborers? Tree workers?

They're just people like everyone else, I'm sure for many of them it's a means of getting by, a job.

Besides, a preacher would quote something like, "Let he among you who is without sin cast the first stone."

No wonder you don't like it.

Not everyone is a statistic, how can you just demean an entire group of people?

(this isn't a defense of pedophiles, its against making blanket statements over groups of people as a whole)

They pay whistleblowers over here. But snitches tend to have a rough time. <shrugs>

Yeah, Treeseer mentioned they pay them too.

In large corps they'd have to protect or incentify people, that's how the Tobacco industry got screwed int he late 90's. Remember Russell Crowe was in a movie about it.

Cover ups, silencing victims have become so prevalent because they work. Lawyers lie and twist the law until judges scream uncle. Kill somebody, etc. and often go scott free. Reticence of witnesses/interveners is prevalent because cops have become relegated to just writing crime reports and rarely if ever stop any crimes. We had major racial riots here a few years ago and Drug dealers came in as opportunists and stayed because cops could no longer do their jobs as they got no support from the govt. or judicial system. They had to cover their own asses as no one else was. If John Q. Public wants to point out a crime he better be able to defend himself from the criminal.

There's been some water under the bridge since the beginning of this thread.

In particular on similar threads concerning the registration and licencing of arborists I passed opinion that when "their own" look after things there's likely to be cover ups. Lawyers looking after lawyers, doctors looking after doctors etc. I mentioned a mixed board so say 50/50, for arborists half the board to have other complimentary skills/qualifications.

Now with two gutsy cases of doctors getting busted (Patel and Reeves) and the cover ups it's interesting to note how the AMA (Australian Medical Association) is putting the spin onto the new board idea.

Here's the article, note the headline.

National doctor register is unsafe: AMA - Breaking News - National - Breaking News

Quote:
National doctor register is unsafe: AMA
December 8, 2008 - 5:12PM

A proposed national register for doctors would be unsafe and allow unauthorised doctors to get their hands on patients, the peak medical body says.

The state and federal governments are examining a plan for doctors' qualifications to be recognised across state borders.

But the head of the Australian Medical Association Dr Rosanna Capolingua believes doctors should oversee the accreditation of their peers, not bureaucrats and administrators.

She said evidence of that was the appointment of an unaccredited doctor at a Bega hospital, who was hired by the local area health service to replace disgraced former doctor Graeme Reeves.

Reeves is accused of sexually assaulting and mutilating hundreds of female patients while practising in NSW.

"We don't believe that the proposal on the table will be any better at protecting patients from the likes of Dr (Jayant) Patel or Dr Reeves," Dr Capolingua told AAP.

Patel faces 14 charges, including three of manslaughter, from his time as a surgeon at the Bundaberg Base Hospital in southern Queensland between 2003 and 2005.

"In fact ... there's a greater risk that Australian people will be subjected to the registration of doctors who do not meet registration requirements in areas of unmet need," Dr Capolingua said.

"In NSW where we've had ... Dr Reeves, NSW health department has - after Dr Reeves was removed - appointed an obstetrician who did not fulfil the accreditation requirements, has not passed his O and G (obstetrics and gynaecology) exams.

"They're (politicians) trying to tell us that it's safer than the system we've got now and I reckon it's a glaring example of where it's not going to be, at all."

The Iraq-trained doctor who replaced Reeves in Bega, Dr Thamir Karam, told AAP he only worked at the Bega hospital for five days and left after receiving unwanted media coverage voicing concern over his qualifications.

Dr Karam said his experience was more than enough to cover obstetrics at Bega hospital and said nothing untoward had happened under his watch.

"If you're talking about someone who's got an Australian fellowship or ticket, well, I haven't got that," he said.

"But I'm able, I got my training, I got all qualified, and the hospital looked into that before I came.

"I went there to help the hospital, because something happened there and they wanted someone to cover obstetrics.

"The hospital was in an embarrassing situation and they needed someone to cover maternity quickly.

"The hospital saw my CV, they know ... I'm qualified to do it."

Dr Karam is now covering for the director of maternity at Mount Isa hospital, in north-west Queensland, for two weeks before heading to Brisbane to work.

Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists president Dr Ted Weaver said overseas doctors undergo mandatory assessments that classified their skill level.

Dr Weaver explained that an "area of need" post for doctors, at remote hospitals such as Bega, didn't call for a qualified specialist, but a doctor who had skills to meet those requirements.

"Someone who mightn't be as fully trained as a specialist, but might have the skills to do those particular things, might then be granted an area-of-need post, or recognition that they can practice within a very defined scope of practice, to work in a particular area under supervision," Dr Weaver said.

"That's quite different from being recognised as a specialist where you could go and work wherever you like without supervision."

Dr Weaver confirmed Dr Karam has a pending application with the college.
Now the AMA concerns have been pretty well explained, and if you cannot see the spin they tried you need to see an optometrist. Remember, they were in charge when the Butcher of Bega was amputating genitals of women!

On the Patel front, it was the Director of Medical Services covering up.

Jayant Patel&squo;s boss Darren Keating accused of cover up | The Courier-Mail

Jayant Patel's boss Darren Keating accused of cover up

DISCIPLINARY proceedings have been lodged against the doctor accused of covering up Jayant Patel's alleged medical negligence.

Darren William Keating, the former director of medical services at the Bundaberg Base Hospital will face the Health Practitioners' Tribunal over alleged incompetence, misleading authorities and ignoring staff and patient complaints over Patel's alleged medical bungles and professional behaviour.

However any disciplinary action will have little meaning for Dr Keating in Queensland after he chose not to renew his state medical registration in June 2006.

But a spokesman for the Medical Board of Queensland said any finding of unprofessional or incompetent behaviour against Dr Keating could still be taken into account by other medical boards, including in Western Australia where the former hospital director is currently registered.

Dr Keating could also be fined, the spokesman said.

According to the board's referral notice, Dr Keating "failed to take any or sufficient appropriate action to investigate" more than one dozen complaints about Patel's alleged clinical incompetence and unprofessional behaviour between May 2003 and January 2005.

Dr Keating also allegedly provided a form he "knew to be misleading and deceptive" about Patel's professional performance to the medical board in February, 2005.

Patel is awaiting a committal hearing on 14 charges including manslaughter, grievous bodily harm and fraud.

The hearing is expected to begin in February and has been set down for five weeks.
Clearly, you cannot entrust AMA to look after their own, and there has to be a transparent complaints system which bypasses the location of the complaint. So you dont complain to the hospital but to something beyond that, where there's people other than doctors to investigate the complaint.
