Question Timing belt change

The "T-BELT" orange warning light came on yesterday in my Toyota Dyna as soon as it hit the 200,000km mark.
I wondered if this was normal and it is a reminder that the Timing belt is due for renewal, or does it mean there is a problem with it right now?

I am aware that there are a few mechanics on this forum so would be glad of any advise.

I also spotted this tip and wondered if anyone else had done a T-Belt change this way:

"There is a trick if you don't see any timing marks as follows:
Strip engine covers etc to the point where the timing belt can be removed.
Remove glow plugs, to enable the engine to be turned by hand.
WITHOUT removing the old belt cut it LENGTHWAYS using a craft knife (by carefully turning the engine by hand), you will then have in effect two half-width belts still on the drive wheels.
CAREFULLY remove the OUTER half belt and replace it with the new belt (which initally will only go on half way)
Then carefully remove the INNER half-belt (you will need to cut across it)
Then by gently turning the engine by hand feed the new belt fully on to the timing gears.......HeyPresto job done!
The idler can be carefully replaced with the new belt in situ."

That just means its do for replacement, you would know if there was trouble with your timing belt.Removing it is easy just get part of it on the pulley's lip and turn the pulley by hand and it just slides off, gettting it on can be a pita.if you timing marks are gone someone would have to have ground them off.

Cheers Bill,

What d'ya think of the way of replacing the timing belt described above?

Have you heard of it before?

Sounds good to me but maybe I'm missing something

As a mechanics rule in the states, your suppose to change them every 50,000 miles, all manufacturers including toyota say that in the repair manuals here.

Usually 100,000 k's here, about 60,000 miles

I like the sound of that cutting method.

Ford! Use to have a Transit in the UK, 2.5 DI, very reliable.

Scrap it! I had 2.25 tonnes on it the other day ( legal max is about 1.6 ) and it pulls fine, sways about a bit though!

I ordered a new timing belt kit, cost about £140 delivered from the UK.
Then I spoke to the Portugueser what helped me acquire the Dyna, to see if he knew how to get the Timing belt light off.
Told him I'd got the new kit ready to fit and blow me, he says it had been done by the garage at 198,500km.
So just had to get the light to go out. I undid two little screws on the back of the speedo and Bob's ure uncle.

I did the one on my Fiat Punto a few months ago using paint to mark the old belt and pulley position, then transferred the marks to the new belt, counting the number of teeth inbetween.

I will use the new kit for the 300,000km change now. Toyota recommend every 100,000km (62,000 miles)

Sudden Death! Lol, all is good though, if it did do that, the car only cost me $300, the timing belt change + seals is almost more then that

And the pistons try to push the valves back up, but the valves are either on the end of a cam rocker or pushrod. So the cams can get damaged, valve guides, head seats, pushrods, rockers.

Boy, imagine when it's one of those new whiz bangers with 4 valves per cyclinder dual overhead cam alloy head.

Ouch. Big bucks.

Crikey, sounds like it needs an awful lot doing.
I reckon all that stuff would cost a site more than 200 bucks in the UK or Portugal.
It'll owe you some fun by the time you've got it up and running.
Did ya take some pics so you can show us the before an' after.
