Default South Australia's Anti Bikie Laws

SA boasts toughest bikie control laws | The Australian

SOUTH Australia boasts the toughest anti-bikie laws in the world with its new Serious and Organised Crime legislation.
The new laws, passed - with some amendments - by state parliament's upper house last night, are designed to dismantle criminal bikie gangs, Premier Mike Rann says.

They give SA Attorney-General Michael Atkinson the power to declare a bikie gang an outlaw organisation, which would prevent members associating with one another and others associating with bikies.

The legislation could also force gangs to abandon their clubrooms and give police the power to prevent bikies attending a place or event where they would pose a threat to the public.

``South Australia's police and prosecutors now have the world's toughest anti-bikie legislation to take the fight to these criminal gangs,'' Mr Rann said.

``These laws provide police and prosecutors with powerful tools to cut the legs out from under these criminal bikie gangs and the hangers-on that help them pursue their illegal activities.''

The government said the new laws would be backed by $14 million in new funding while the number of officers in the Criminal Gang Task Force had already been more than doubled.

Mr Atkinson said the laws sent a clear message to the criminal bikie gang members and their offsiders.

``These bikie gangs will no longer be able to hide behind their code of silence, intimidation and high-priced lawyers,'' he said.

``These laws will leave these motorcycle gangs and their associates no choice but to close up shop or move their criminal activities out of this state.''
