Having recently returned from a very enjoyable two days out in Western Queensland http://www.treeworld.info/attachment...1&d=1194026811 I'd like to share this little gem of a secret with you Porcupine Gorge ![]() Its approx 120m to the bottom ![]() If you live in Queensland, get out here and visit this incredible geological feature at least once in your life ![]() ![]() ![]() During the wet you'll need a good 4wd to get here but the scene of millions of gigalitres of water crashing along the gorge will blow your mind ![]() Porcupine%20Gorge.pdf |

Further up the development road is a camp site where you can safely walk down (in the dry!) to the bottom of the gorge, there is a feature there called the pyramid. Three views of the pyramid walking down to the bottom of the gorge ![]() ![]() ![]() Not an egyptian in sight ![]() Someone's crying |

Nice pics Sean. I went there in 1992. I still think of it when I get down and out about things. It looks exactly the same way I remember it except for the new viewing platform. It was called Porcupine Gorge back then. Not sure if they have changed the name but it?s still beautiful. I took the Kennedy Development Road from Hughenden to get there. It was a bit rough in the old laser and there were quite a few roo?s around to watch out for. I even found a young echidna on the track down from the camping ground. There is a sub species of Eucalyptus tessellaris growing in the gorge. I think it?s had a name change now but it looks like E. tessellaris. There was also a paper bark flowering further down past the pyramids. It looks like Melaleuca linariifolia but was more compact than the local form round here.

Hi Bernard Its still called Porcupine Gorge....yes that road is much better than it would have been in 92 but I would still advise caution in the wet! ![]() Not sure of the Euc you speak about (very hard to id the crosses!!) but suspect the paperbark was Melaleuca fluviatilis, very pretty. I know the US fellas are thinking why the big deal, but even here in Oz we have bigger canyons in many states, but this one is so similar in topographical form to the Grand Canyon particularly at the viewing platform...btw Bernard did you get tempted to get right to the edge?? We did even started to clamber down but stopped when we realised it ould take at least 50 mins to get down and more to get back!!!! |

I noticed the imaginary face even before reading your comment. Nice pics. The color of the rock must be marvelous during sunrise or sunset. |
