Default Plane Crash Sites

I met a guy yesterday who researches (as a hobby) plane crash sites...he saw me inspecting trees...and approached with had a few questions about trees... such as species recognition, fire damage, radiant heat damage, shrapnel damages, general impact destruction/recovery...and so on.

He's promised some photos of same which I will post when I get them.
Also provided some keywords for Google search (Aust.) if anyone is interested. Here goes....ADF-Serials....Crash Site & Memorials.

The Firefly WD 869 incident would be the closest to 'home'...about 30 mins driving away, but in a very remote location just below the lip of the escarpment (Saddleback/Noorinan Mountain).

There are a few good shots of the typical very dense heathland vegetation at the top (plateau) ... akin to that seen in hanging swamps of Barren Grounds Nature Reserve (NPWS Reserve).

i did some clearing at the army base an hour from home. we were clearing bombing sites. they hAD a n explosives team cruisin in front of us with metal detectors retrieving undetonated devices. once i saw an unexploded cluster bomb piece stjcking threw a poplar. we cut, pushed into circle with huge dozer and burned. some of the unexploded stuff caused fire to get a little outa control but they got it eventually. wasnt really a fan of thatg job. later in years i worked there again for a coupledays along side a brontosaurus chewing up larger roadside brush. found so busted 55 gal dfrums leaking green/yellow fluid. i havent grown that extra arm out me arse so it musta been semi safe.

There was one in the forest near here, in the 1940s - small plane. I think 3 people perished. 2 were buried along Butte Fork trail and there is a pile of rocks covering them, and a plaque.

With a tip from a local hiker, I found the remnants about 1000 feet downhill from the plaque and trail. About all that remains is a lot of the engine. Looks like a bunch of cylinder heads in a circular arrangement. And the battery is there and the aluminum battery case. A few pieces of metal, and that's about the extent of it.

That's about 60 years gone by.

A few miles up the trail is this old historic Butte Fork Toolhouse built for the Forest Service in the 1920s to store trail building supplies. This cabin will be passed before reaching the crash site. There are not very many historical buildings in this Rogue River National Forest.

The Harlow Cabin below has nothing to do with plane crash sites. It's about 5 miles from the trailhead for Butte Fork trail, but to the east.

Fantastic...Who owns (maintains) these huts now...are they still Forest Sevice Huts?... Are people (public) allowed to overnight camp and/or take refuge etc.
Looks like a really nice spot ... BUT looks a bit like bear country too (we dont have bears in Aussie).

Azrael sounds like your thinking of bothies, plenty of them in the UK used a fair few of them myself as a teenager walking the Pennine way etc...

Also maybe some of our UK members might be able to add info about the crash sites if any of them walk? As a teenager I walked over numerous WW2 crash sites I certain there's websites dedicated to many of them...even saw pretty big fragments from the planes at two up around Glossop and Edale, never touched any of it though. (too many friends and familt in the forces to be disrespectful)

Sean...
The buildings reminded me of the huts in Kosciosko National Park...available for emergency use by cross-country skiers in winter...or long-haul hikers in summer....ppl who get caught out in sudden weather change....these huts SAVE LIVES.
They're maintained N.P.W.S.(and volunteers)...They nearly always have a log book for visitors to sign.
But a number of the huts were burnt down in the 2006(?) fires which swept thru the Park.
There are volunteers working now to gradually rebuild these huts...

It *IS* fun!!!! and you don't need primacord. I posted on my experiences with stump blasting here:

"Worlds fastest firewood splitter"

In some places around here I found it actually *can* be done legally. But you need liscensure, permits, etc etc...

I do all the blasting and pyrotechnics for a friend who makes short films in the local area. We have to have a Fire dept guy on hand, but since I only use low grade explosive, they aren't really picky about liscences and permits. Compounds and plastiques they're really picky about, anything that needs a booster to create high explosive detonation. (yer primacord would fit in that catagory)

I'll see if I can find a stump at a friend's place that I can do a blasting demonstration on. That'd be pretty cool, I never even thought to video it last time.

Gonna have to go find all my supplies, I store em spread out so I don't just have a box full of stuff that looks suspicious.
