Trolling for information. I get them regularly, for about 5 years now. Several flavors:

1) African son/daughter/wife of deposed dictator with millions US
2) Asian company looking for US bank accounts to deposit millions into
3) UK or Irish lottery winning in the millions US that I won (but never bought a ticket for or heard of)
4) Italian endowment wishing to give me a several million dollar grant

All the same: Give them information, they will ask for you to open a bank account with severl hundred to several thousand dollars (just to open the account mind you). Or better, they like you to have a Paypal account. Then they ask for access to that account so that they can deposit the millions in US funds into it. Of course, theya re really going to withdraw whatever you were dumb enough to put in there for them to take. Of course even if you do not open the bank accounts, they have information on YOU that they can sell as a target for other frauds (read below).

Similar fraud schemes are that they ask you to open Paypal or other US bank accounts and deposit checks into. They then take their 80% 'cut' out of your account and you get to 'keep' the 20%. Of course, the checks are all bad, and after a month the FBI will be knocking on your door, and you will be lucky if you do not do time in jail. Parallel scheme is that they deposit checks into your Paypal accounts for you to buy stuff for them on Ebay and online retailers and send overseas. In some cases they even 'hire' you as an employee of an off-shore company and pay you with bad checks/credit into your Paypal account to launder the bad checks into cash and merchandise. Or they send merchandise to you at your address that they bought online using a stolen credit card and you are supposed to divvy up the stuff and send it to them overseas.

Beware Tarzan, its a jungle out there!

Quote:
THE FONDATION DE FRANCE(FDF)
Lutece
16 Rue Lanterne,
Lyon 69001, France.

The Fondation De France(FDF) would like to notify you that you have been
chosen by the board of trustees as one of the final recipients of a cash
Grant/Donation for your own personal, educational, and business
development.

The FDF, established 1977 by the Multi-Million groups and now supported
by the Economic Community for West African States (ECOWAS), United
Nations Organization (UNO) and the European Union (EU) was conceived
with the objective of human growth, educational, and community
development.

In conjunction with the ECOWAS, UNO and the EU, We are giving out a
yearly donation of US$350,000.00 (Three hundred and Fifty thousand
United states dollars only) each to 100 lucky recipients.

These specific Donations/Grants will be awarded to 100 lucky
international recipients worldwide; in different categories for their
personal business development and enhancement of their educational plans.
This is a yearly program, which is a measure of universal development
strategy.

The objective is to make a notable change in the standard of living of
people all around the Universe (From America to Europe, Asia to Africa
and all around), probably like in the next 20yrs.

Kindly note that you will only be choosen to receive the donation
once, which means that subsequent yearly donation will not get to you
again.
Take time and thought in spending the donation wisely on something that
will last you a long time. Recipients are only eligible to be awarded
this donation once.

Based on the random selection exercise of internet websites and
millions of supermarket cash invoices worldwide, you were selected among
the lucky recipients to receive the award sum of US$350,000.00 as
charity donations/aid from the Fondation De France, ECOWAS, EU and the
UNO in accordance with the enabling act of Parliament. (Note that all
beneficiaries email addresses were selected randomly from over 100,000
internet websites or a shop\'s cash invoice around your area in which
you might have purchased something from).

You are required to contact the Executive Secretary below, for
qualification documentation and processing of your claims. After
contacting our office, you will be given your donation pin number, which
you will use in collecting the funds. Please endeavor to quote your
Qualification numbers (FDF-444-6647-9163) in all discussions.

Executive Sec. Mark Williams
Email: markwilliamsesq_barr@yahoo.co.uk

Please note that these donations/Grants are strictly administered by the
EU, ECOWAS, UNO. You are by all means hereby advised to keep this whole
information confidential until you have been able to collect your
donation, as there have been many cases of double and unqualified claim,
due to beneficiaries informing third parties about his/her donation.

Finally, all funds should be claimed by their respective beneficiaries,
not later than 20 days after notification. Failure to do so will mean
cancellation of that beneficiary and its donation will then be reserved
for next year?s recipients.

On behalf of the Board kindly, accept our warmest congratulations.

Regards.

My Fellow TreeWorlders:

I am the captive daughter of an online Arbor Forum dictator living in the United States of America. I have the sum of ONE MILLION US online reputation points that we are wanting to deposit into an AU or NZ Arborist Forum. Please contact me with an account that we can deposit these valuable reputation points into, and you will be receiving 20% of those online reputation points into your own personal online forum account. This is not a joke! I am really looking for somepace else to keep them! Do not miss this opportunity to have something of great value that you can pass on to your children and grandchildren, and gloat over with great pride. With these points, you can smear someone or give them great reputation credits with on some other arbor sites online. You will feel the power!

Kind regards,
Miss Candy Barsaw

LOL. And donations whilst click frauding Google. You know they start threads on specific topics to see what ads pop up so they can click on them etc?

For example, adsense works of keywords. Insurance companies and banks etc might be paying $5 a click where as crumby chainsaw sellers payin 0.05cents. So they start a thread on insurance or banking or fast food etc, click the ads and earn MB some money.

That's click fraud, you are not allowed to entice or solicit clicks from your members.

You know when I was running an adwords campaign, where I pay Google out of my money for every click, that bastid was organising people to track my ads and click them to increase cost of gaining members!

That is what the man is, kiddie porn scum.

And birds of a feather ................

Yah, I stihl post over there. But mainly in winter when it rains here. In summer I am too busy. Last spring (March here) I got into a riff with Ralph and the other mods over posting issues. Ralph removed several of my entire threads, and there was a falling out. I got 2 infraction points for daring to criticise the mods. Then Ralph sent me a (in his terms) 'reaching out' PM while he blasted me on one of his 'I'm gonna nuke this guy' threads where he let everyone bash a guy in CA that wanted off of AS. Anywah, Ralph claimed that the guy in CA (Randy) and I were the same person, and I got into it with him again. At that point I stopped posting and reading AS for about 6 months, until I heard of Ralph's demise. He is no longer a mod there, got a divorce, and last I saw was posting from a library computer becasue his wife got his laptop. His replacement is much much better. TreeCo.

But yah, only so much stuff you can post about trees and chainsaws. I wish there was more of a logging forum someplace. I do not climb much any more, and we manage an 80 acre tree stand here. We planted over 10,000 trees in the last 3 winters. We are finally done with planting and do not need to plant any more this year (to avoid taxes for felling, we planted up about 10 acres). We are also felling a lot of trees here lately, thinning and clearing a 2 acre area of old growth oaks of fir trees. I dunno, I've cut maybe 1,000 some odd trees in the past month here. 20 cords of wood piled up and another 20 cords of limbed poles to block, and huge slash piles that will be torched in the spring. We are about half way through that now. Mostly grand firs, (sucky sappy tres and lousy firewood) and doug fir (better firewood, but I am thinning the grand fir out and leaving the dougs in).

Eh... long cold rainey nights. The girlfriend reads mostly. Not much else to do here in late fall and winter but watch TV, drink beer and post online. Not bad though, I could be in Tromso above the arctic circle like Troll and the Witch. They do not get a sunrise for another couple of months! That would drive me insane. Stephen King kind of insane...

I believe that he is not a mod there any more. I read a post of his saying that he was not a mod any more, and that he hoped to be a mod again in future. TreeCo replaced him. Ralph's last post on AS was over 2 months ago. He cannot be a mod if he is not online and posting there.

I get these spoofs, or phish by the billions. Just forward the email with headers included to spoof@paypal.com. Then delete it. They will deal with it. Do not even try to click on the link. I just move the mouse down to see where the link goes... usually some bozo_online_account_dot_paypal_dot_ com. Paypal are better than most regarding online fraud (I had my Ebay account jacked a few years ago, and there was an attempt to hack into my Paypal account about a year ago). They spoofs are many, some claiming that you have to log into to unlock your account, some saying that you need to log in to change your password, some saying that there is a problem with your account. Same with Ebay, forward spoofs to them at spoofs@ebay.com. I get them claiming all kinds of things, like I did not pay for an item that I did not bid on, or I am being suspended for shill bidding, or I won some item that I did not bid on.

Its a jungle online, Tarzan.

This last few days I've had two emails arrive, both said "virus found" in them and not to read anymore, just delete straight away. Thank f*** the virus scan works!
I deleted them straight away, so can't post what they said, they had very little content though, just a little verse or poem, if I get another I will make a note of the content.

Yah, there have been several viruses going around lately that are in emails and attached files. One reason I use something like Yahoo as an email service provider, is that I do not download anything when I read it online. My GF has an email system that downloads all here emails to her laptop. She has 10x the virus problems that I do (same brand of laptops). I also have an up to date virus protection program always running on my system.

I got a new phish today... saying I was due an IRS tax refund for $800. All I had to do was log in, give them my SS#, DOB, a valid credit card number, and credit card details, and they would deposit the money RIGHT AWAY into my credit card account!

I forwarded it to the IRS for investigation. The IRS does not apply refunds toward credit cards, and they do not even take credit cards without your paying a fee to use them. There is no end...
