It seems the Australian Electoral Commission may no longer fund the National Tally Room in Canberra on election night, so the TV networks will probably decide to report the election frm their own studios. The NTR is a place of great theatre where all the political journalists from all the media networks get together and people from Canberra come along to watch. In the old days the politicians used to come as well; Bob Hawke and Malcolm Fraser were both there in 1983 to witness their respective win/loss. Nowadays the pollies go to party functions in hotels in the state capitals, but the NTR is still a place of great vibrancy, and this comes through to TV viewers. It will be missed. |
