Members with Zero Posts

Hey Ekka,

I think that you should set up something that takes action against the lurkers and zero-post members. You know, like, if someone is a member and doesn't post *anything* within a mont's time of joining up, just delete them.

You've got all these people, 900 some odd, and they're just sapsuckers... they use you, they use your site, they get the info they want, have nothing to contribute for themselves, and you end up footing the bill for it and having to put up with it. Screw em!

I suggest that any new member who doesn't at least try to add something, or get's involved in the forum in some way, get's deleted as just a TreeWorld lurker/scum-sucker.

How hard is it really to come out of the woodwork, and actually SAY something at least just once??? Who know's what the response might be?

Oh come on now! I lurked for several months before I posted!
I'm not in the tree business but am interested in learning about what you guys do. I really didn't think I had much to add to the forum so I just lurked. I didn't want to bore you folks. I never felt unwelcome here either like y'all were running a private club. I enjoy all the shop talk going on here!
I would think the more folks you could get to view this forum, the more they could gain a better understanding of what y'all do. How could that not be promoting good will of your industry to those who don't really understand what you folks are all about?
I would think the more lurkers, the better!
It wasn't long ago I thought you folks were out of your minds and had to be some kind of crazy people for climbing around it those tree tops!
Since, I've learned you people are doing a very skilled profession that requires much disipline and attention to detail.
Maybe someday the lurkers will post when they have become better educated by reading what the experts are saying here.
Heck, maybe some of the lurkers are homeowners who needs tree work and are doing some research. Maybe armed with good knowledge, they won't be so quick to hire some fly by night tree people and call one of you people instead!
Just my 2? worth anyway!

Interesting, perhaps we are too full of ourselves or too much jargon talk. So true of many professions.

If you notice I always call trees by their common name not botanical, that's a start, many academics try to impress with jargon and I make a point of not doing that with my clients too.

Not at all and I don't think that's what Pigdog was suggesting.

Treeworld is what it says, a place to discuss tree facts and problems but there is also enough off topic stuff to keep us all interested.

i find this funny . i just joined here but was a member of another site . i have cut fire wood most of my life , more later than earlier .
i never once gave a thought to using safty equipment . chaps , gloves helmet ear, eye . and do now realise that even if you are a expert . accidents hapen . without being a lurker on the other site i would still be cutting unsafely , i picked up alot of great info on the other site , and thats why i registerd here , i have very little to contribute . i am not an experienced tree man . so if you dont want me reading your post . then just push the button , or pm me and i will do it my self . i just dont understand your you way of thinking on this matter. mabey explain how it hurts this forum for me to be a member and not post . hoot

You know....here on TREEWORLD you are NEVER alone ... there's plenty of ppl out there doing exactly the same as you do ... and then theres other ppl who have a different sort of life with trees ...
Posting is the way to people learn who you are and what you do ... ppl to share with... ppl to bounce off.

Many many moons ago I culled around 30 zero posting members.

I ran a filter, then emailed them all giving them a deadline. The criteria was that they had no posts, were a member for 3 months and didn't visit for 30 days.

A few came out of the woodwork from the original mailing list and posted to save their butts. There was motivation for that though at the time, fact was we were trolled and needed to clean out the place and get genuine members not trolls.

Those days have pretty much passed although a recent attack by Juggernaut aka Toonces was recently caught and banned.

Some people join the forum to view information, when they need it. They might not return ever or for months etc. I know on some forums I'm on I go there maybe once a year for something I need, but I dont get booted off.

So, I feel unless they're trolls they stay.

Now as far as getting zero posters to post, well, it's up to them. Look at it a rather unusual way, you join a library and read their books but the librarian comes along and tells you unless you write one or something your membership will be pulled.

The benefits to authors are huge, they get known, if they have links in their sigs they get exposure etc. Some members do get work from posting here you know. Readers see your knowledge, your location and contact you, some members are bold enough to have their phone numbers in their signatures etc.

I'd have to agree with Pigdog. I dont much understand the computer/space/cost requirements to running a website such as this. But I myself did hang around for a while before posting. There are alot of very professional people here whom, thru their profession talk in a manner which may be intimidating to others (to post/join conversation).
Yet I fell TW has a great range of members, from pure lookers, to firewood cutters, to very educated consulting arborists. Having said that I like the fact that nobody uses their education level/company size/geographic location to slander others, which sounds like it may happen elsewere.
Let em watch, they may think they have nothing to offer, but the penny may drop one day. Just keep out the d@#kheads who ridicule rather than offer constructive thoughts......
I think you have already done a very good job at moderating this Ekka.

a troll is someone who joins a forum just to cause trouble , i think .

i didnt mean any harm in my post i have nothing but respect for a grown man that climbes up in the top of a tree just to cut it down. i am not a climber anymore , on anything . i realy like to watch the videos . h

I agree with what Azrael said.... you may be "intimidated" or feel that you don't fit in with all the pros here, but as long as you've got your foot in the door with *something* having to do with trees, one of our other 1,000 members is in your shoes too.

Just think, your starting a thread, or posting on one at *your level* may provoke someone else who is also at your level, though just lurking to say "hey, that person is just like me!" and they'll PM or post you back.

Ekka, yes, I'm not the biggest pro on here, but I've got my phone number in my signature, and I've gotten several calls just from it being there, it's great!

I just think that most of the people out there "just watching" have ALOT to contribute, and they just don't know it yet.

Alot of people don't think that their posts will sound right. When I write a post, I do so as though I were actually talking, hence the abbreviations and such that I use often..."prolly" "somethin" "kinda", etc... Just being able to come out and say "somethin" as to how you feel about a subject will generate responses. Just say something!!! Interact! Join! Be a part of it all.

There is a WIDE range of professionalism in the spectrum of people who are avid posters on TW. I consider myself towards the lower end, and other's at the top, but the only way that I can become more like them is by actively conversing with them both on the forum and in chat so that I can LEARN things.... because of this site... my learning curve is on a vertical curve right now, and every night brings something new, but it's because I interact, and I get something back out of it.

Just reading it all and going "hmmmm" to myself keeps things plateau'd.... c'mon people! Flood the server! Say something! Tell us who you are and what you do! Interact! LEARN!!!!
