As large portion of my income is derived from the cattle industry and the decisions of our Federal Government combined with the negligence of the Meat & Livestock Association will have a direct effect on my income thus making my outlook bias. I thought I would ask for others measured views. Even though most southern pastoralists product is only destined for the domestic trade the flow on effect of our local markets flooded with meat that was destined for export presents the non combatants with financial issues. I will preference myself by saying that I do not condone animal cruelty in any shape or form. I do not condone the methods that have been employed in Indonesia (or for that fact many other countries). I will say that I have guessed for many years that standards in third world countries were not good, this can be said about most things including human rights. The MLA (Meat & Livestock Association) takes a fee from all producers under the guise of marketing and securing the future of the industry, this is non negotiable and levied against our sales (amongst other charges). I can't see much return when the future groomed by the MLA is to this poor standard. Whilst I can't condone animal cruelty I also can't condone the way the Federal Government, MLA and animal rights groups are so quick to cut one head of a two headed snake leaving it to hemorrhage to death. Watch out the remaining one may come around to bite them on the arse. Cheers Tony |

Typical idiotic politician with a knee jerk reaction. I wonder if the fool could change family law as fast. ![]() It's about as well thought out as the rest of the damage these two female fools (Gillard and Bligh) have dished out. And as always, in orgs I do not trust.

Was reading in the news yesterday as to how many different sectors of this industry will be hurt bad by this, like food suppliers and transporters (trucks and ships). To sever this line without any other viable options in the short term for our cattle industry is pure insanity. I've read a few stories about people that will go bust from this but no doubt there will boat loads more. What's is actually needed to save some people here (mid/long term)? Another article said a new abattoir in QLD to help process more in country then ship out meat in boxes. |

The overall long term effects won't be measured, the government won't measure the loss to business, loss to employees, loss's to and in families (yes I mean in) because if they did that then it would make them responsible and accountable for poor governing. As near all the livestock destined for Indonesia is for ground beef, already in the past week on fear alone our southern domestic markets for chopper cows fell back 20c odd per/Kg. The agent was out this morning, feed on steers I had valued up last week (prior to the ban) at $600-$700 have dropped back to $500-$600. Unfortunately my input costs aren't adjusted accordingly. Just to put a little perspective on margins for every 12 I sell 1 go's free, federal, state tax's, MLA, yards fees, drovers fees, agents commission and transport. This is without any costs associated in growing them. Now with say a knock of $100/head a further loss of 1 in 7. I, like alot of others have just finished preg checking breeders with a 99% conception rate, good a, or so I thought until this week. The export industry is going to take a significant knock but so will the domestic trade and that will filter through to consumers with negative effects. The already tough low grade meat peddled by the chains will dive to a new low, I'm betting the shelf prices will dive little though. Well as in years of fire, drought, floods and now the Gillard Government I'll just have to work outside the farm to offset costs. I can fight fire, build levee's and manage drought but this latest unnatural disaster has us on the back foot. Cheers ![]() Tony Last edited by Tony Knight; 11th June 2011 at 09:30 PM. |

Seems the labor govt is hell bent on stuffing Australia up, we had Rudd with Mining tax, Ginja Ninja with carbon tax now this .... and they aint got a friggin clue about managing the boat people. They blow money faster than it's made, flog off assets to balance the books, tax the shit out of everything they come across but offer the lowest socio economic voter an idiotic tax cut to lure votes. It was also Rudd that had the alco-pops tax, how did that help binge drinking? Another idiotic decision.
