Hey treekiwi, is there anything BUT V8s? I guess the only thing that might compare is an in-line 6 cummins diesel, but I sure you are talking about car racing. I guess I am showing my age! |

Hi TreeD, sorry yes, its a v8 supercar competition, only in Australia and New Zealand, it used to have Skyline GTRs and other cars but the big v8s got beaten to often lol, so now there is only 2 manufacturers, Holden(esentially GM) and Ford producing the cars heres a link.... V8 Supercars |

| I have seen some coverage of that in the past, I still think its weird to see everyone going the wrong way around the track! I checked your link, and am GLAD to see that the supercar girls are wearing the same clothes as their North American counter-parts.![]() Don't forget that I'm a Canadian, our racing includes dogs, sleds and fur outerwear. |

I had a '79 F250 w 300 CID in-line six hooked to a 4 spd strd, we used to pull 2 stock cars with it and still got 25mpg.

Oh Bill, did I say it was stock? I put split headers on it, it was equipped with a two barrel carb, and I discovered that it had California emmisions on it. I ONLY had to figure out what to do with about 50 extra vacuum lines. The rest of the truck was a dud, rear-end problems, and the transmission case cracked along a casting mark. If you want to get real good at twisting wreckes, try and race a '67 Ford Fairlane 500, and keep the front wheels on it, on a dirt track. The last spindle I changed out on it took about 15 minutes, BUT i had had a lot of practice. The one chevelle we ran had 4 different engines in it in one year, 350/283/327and finally a in-line 6. Boy where we lucky the tech guys were so young, they didn't know the differance in the V8s. Our competetors sure did though. Now it would be economic suicide to try and dirt track race, all the good old rear wheel drive cars are gone, and V8 power trains would be worth their weight in gold. Ah! the good old days, gone but not forgotten. As a side note the Fairlane needed a side window when I got it, IF I would have restored it to original, I could have retired, 20/20 hind-site! |

Newguy18, that truck is long gone. If memory serves me right the headers were from Clifford research, and the carb was ready on it. The ignition was reconfigured, to do away with the vacuum retard valve. Like I said, the thing ended up in the wrong country. It had California emmisions. At the end of the modifications, it ran like it should have, right out of the box. ![]() I don't get the thinking of the engineers these days, my grandpa bought a new Oldsmobile Delmont 88 (1968) w a 455 CID, 2 barrel carb, and single exhaust. It was rated at 425 HP stock. At 80 MPH it was abe to give us 28 MPG, and had lots more to give. Don't forget these were high compression engines, and ran REAL gasoline. Lead and NO benzene was he secret. I ran aviation fuel (105 octane) in a class "F" flat-track Polaris snowmobile, plus a dribble of alcohol. Worked well until I misjudged the temperature and blew the heads through the hood at about 75mph. I ended up having to plane the heads .035 just to make them flat again. Oversize studs, and good-to-go-again. The clutch was worked to kick in at 9000 rpm, you had to install a NEW belt every other time I started it up. I wish could turn back time to when there was lots of money, and nothing to spend it on BUT toys. If this 20/20 hindsight was do able,I would probably be retired by now. I am halfway there, I have the tired part down to a fine art form.

Dang,i can only find 1 barrels around here [or online for that matter].I'm gonna spend probabley 150 -200 bucks to hop up the ignition system.accel super stock coil,points,distributer,8.5 mm wireset, header plugs, performance cap and rotor.just basics figured i'd try and slap a 2 barrel on it to improve gas mileage and power. Are those k and n filters any good?

Newuy18, I have had K&N filters on diesel engines in the past, the real beauty o them is that YOU have the ability to clean them yourself. This is a real benefit with engines that are used in severe environments. The street rod guys seem to like them, OR maybe they just have the fancy decal. It seems to me that we squeaked out a few more ponies, and got a couple mpg.
