Here is an up close and personal view of the Gulf of Mexico oil platform explosion from a guy 15 miles away (about as close as you would want to be to that thing) Front Row View of Gulf Explosion - Mobile Alabama |

Yeah, that's a serious issue. We also recently had some Chinese ship run aground on the Barrier Reef, then this happened and took the news by storm. BP has stepped up to the plate and is paying out fishermen to help contain this mess.

Boy that's bad. They are saying on the news here that it could prove to be the worst spill in history worldwide. Any news on what set it off? I hope they contain it soon. Julie |

Many of those oil rigs are getting old, with guys running them run long shifts and it can be intense work. Some of the roughnecks as they are called are not the sharpest tools in the drawer either. They are dealing with exposive material all the time and any number of things can go wrong with oil wells, naturally or unnaturally. No information on the cause yet. Such a huge area right across the Gulf there, and so many waterways to be affected, it's bad alright. The cost to people will be huge, you would think that The States already has enough on their plates with the economic downturn, I'm so sad to see this. Julie |

That counter on that link is still ticking over WT. Thousands and thousands of gallons of oil still leaking! It's dropped off the news here, I just thought maybe they had it under control now, but it doesn't really look that way going by that counter still flying around. |

Not under control, or even close. BP claims to be putting a pipe in place to suck out the oil into tankers, but the slick is spreading and they admit that more oil is leaking than estimated earlier. Lots of political finger pointing now between congress, BP, EPA, the gulf states, yadda yadda. The EPA is ordering BP to use less toxic dispersants. I watch Jim Lehrers? News Hour as I cook, I like to keep up on the international front, seems that it's nowhere under control and the dispersant is lethal to all marine life, bummer catastrophe after catastrophe. I hope they find a solution soon. | |

Yes, I have no love for camels. Alpaca wool is spendy stuff. This will likely bankrupt BP by the time it is over. BP is one of the more 'progressive' oil companies that actually believes in peak oil and finite supply.

You guys do realize that we're forced to drill offshore (in Intl'l waters no less) because our own system wont allow us to drill on land in new areas which have massive reserves; where this problem would have been capped and fixed in about 2 hours. But nooooooooo....... lets add in a MILE of ocean between the drilling rig and the ocean floor. Hell, we're saving Caribou right? Screw the sealife!! I'll likely not understand this type of thinking anytime soon. But then, I'm not a politician. I'm relatively certain that anyone who WANTS to be in politics, shouldnt be. Instead they should be nominated based on a scale of how badly they dont want to be in politics, and then forced into the role. ![]() While I'm at the ranting. I think it's silly to assume that anyone could pull off this much ocean drilling without some major accident looming on the horizon. There are just so many factors involved. People need to realize how hard BP is working 24 hrs round the clock to fix this situation, and how difficult of a problem it truly presents them with. I think they're doing a great job so far. |
