I look at that and think that Australia is a weird place.

Maybe I would fit in better there? I have a cousin that lives in Sydney...

Brooklyn... man, that may as well be as far from here as Sydney. My dad was from Brooklyn. Grandmother had a brownstone house there. Never liked that place. What used to be called Little Norway is now just a part of BIG Puerto Rico. No hablan Ingles ahora. Burned out cars in the streets, and the local store there had all bullet proof glass and stainless steel, and a drawer slot for money to go in and booze bottles to go out. East LA... I lived in LA for a while. Up in the Hollywood Hills. Nice people, hated living in that the place though. I could understand East LA. Se Habla Espanol, y Ingles. Compton (what was Watts, before the first riots) was worse. East San Diego was also worse. Lived in San Diego for 7 years, more livable, nice beaches, but way too crowded there now. Was there during the Rodney King riots. They burned a lot of stuff donw there that week. I bought an AR-15 and a Colt model 1911 .45 that week too. The Ozarks... never been there, or Down Under.

I fear that my velcro shoes wound give out if I went to Australia, and I would fall off the earth into space. Is that true? I mean, I read about it online, so there must be some truth to that...

Sounds like you *have* been all over southern california! Spoken like a true native. Glad to hear that ya got properly outfitted, "L.A. Style"

Ever heard of ...I think it was B & B Guns, down there in the valley?

When those two guys in body armor held up the bank, with the car full of full-auto's and spare mags, B & B Guns opened up their arms lockers to the police and started equipping them all with assault rifles, since their pistols weren't stopping the blokes.
The fight didn't last much longer after that!

I remember the riots... Dad got sent with a bunch of the other CHP down to Watts to protect firemen, who were being shot and killed by rioters intent on looting the city clean. Came home with a car-door full of bullet holes. Amazing what a society is capable of around here.

Windthrown,
I was in Portland Oregon in 1990. It was pretty scary there Downtown at night, although we were told they were mostly homeless people and generally harmless.
Loved the World Forestry Centre (Center).

they are a mountain range stretching across arkansas and several other states. famous for the Hatfield and Mc Coy feud. a bunch a hillbillys shootin each other up. the term redkneck originates from a group of union coalminers {supporting one of the killed hatfields}wearing red bandanas to destinguish themselves from the non union coal companies as the all marched there with arms to kick their asses.
now its known for its bootleg booze and killer pot. many of thepeople there were dispalaced scottish clans that were pushed from their homelands to northren ireland and then migrated to north america because they werent any better off there. very clannish. type of place your father is your brothers cousins nephews may in fact be your brother.http://www.wvculture.org/history/cri...eld-McCoy_feud

Nope. I bought all my weapons of mass destruction (in CA anyway) from my brother here in Oregon. Had to special register the AR (DPMS Panther). My match sight .45 was a 'junk gun' in CA 'cause it was not a brand that was tested. Come to think of it, my Walther PPK was a junk gun there as well. James Bond carried a junk gun, yah know? Here in OR they are just handguns and rifles. No one cares... no need to register, no special deal to sell them, no issues with getting a carry permit here either.

They let you guys own guns there Down Under?

Scary in Portland? I have never been scared there. Even in the old days (1960's) with lots of bums passed out sleeping on strorefront steps and stuff. Only time I was frightened was in NYC. I was with my brother and walking around Time Square. We walked a block or two south and suddenly the climate became tense and our skin tones were suddenly a lot lighter than the rest of the people around us. A few goons came up and got into our space... we just kept walking. Odd thing too about NYC. Next night we were on the Staten Island Ferry about 10pm, and there was a knife fight on the back deck. The Acro Bitches were taking on some other gang. No one paid any attention, and the gangs paid no attention to anyone else. I was on edge there most of the time. All the noise and honking and screaming and weird stuff that you see, like along the Avenue of the Americas. Walk along and a guy pulls up in a Caddy and pops the trunk, and there on the sidewalk is an instant suit sale going on. 10 seconds later he is gone again...

Funny thing about that trip was that a week before I was given a citation for J-walking in San Diego. I was in Mission Beach, and walking along the sidewalk bar hopping, and a cop car comes rolling up and stops in front of me, and the 'nice' officer asked me if I saw the red light at the intersection I walked through. I put my foot up and said I was not driving... he said 'gimme your license' and wrote me a ticket that cost me $10. Anal retentive police force down there. Anyway, I got my $10 back about 5 times in NYC when I told people I got a ticket for J-walking in San Diego, and they refused to believe me. Wanna bet? Flash the pink ticket copy at them, and they say, "DAMN!" In NYC, at EVERY intersection, people crowd in until cars cannot pass, and that's how you get across the street. Stop lights mean nothing. I went from one end of Manhattan to the other (north-south) on a bus and counted the red lights that bus ran. The count was in the 20s by the time I got off.

Sigh. Different world here. Trees, chainsaws and sheep.

Windthrown,

You just aptly described the difference between the Antelope Valley here in Ca, and Chicago, IL. It's like two completely different worlds. One's a desert and forest, the other is a brick jungle.

Loved the World Forestry Centre (Center). loved portland Or. Try to find some pix of the old forestry center. It burned down in the 1960's. It was huge. Large gay population now, 2nd gayest city next to S.F. Big music scene. big trees to. Cut down alot of big cedar trees when I 1st started climbing. Going back in march. I cant wait to see some of the trees I pruned 5 years ago
