Holy dooleys!

I had no idea people had a job like that. I watched a few of the video's.

He errected scaffold up there, also he had the job of demolishing a huge chimney piece by piece and bucket it down!

What a legend, he can have that job.

Oh, bugger all PPE for those ladder climbs.

" The Stairway to Heaven" Not me, Fred, your job is safe...for an older man he is still fit! Can you imagine how your legs would feel at the end of the day.

Fred was awesome, I use to watch his programmes on TV.

Who put those blummin ladders up there in the first instance?

He makes it look easy, all the way up there and yet he was such a down to earth bloke, very modest.

He was quite simply unique...he put the ladders up, he would take the ladders down, well along with an offsider..to see him climb to the top of the chimney with the big overhang I got tired just sitting there! How he could do it day in day out no ppe no tie in at all...let go and well as he says half a day with the undertaker!!!

There are not many people like Fred around anymore (and no I don't mean that they fall off whatever to their death!!!) but I have been lucky enough to bump into a few and tried my best to learn something of their simple appreciation of life and the world around them....watch some of the other vids and you'll see what I'm getting at

The young fella in the video, on his mothers arm, is 'Young Jack', as he is known as to his colleagues, at the Manx Steam Railway workshops. Jack has followed his fathers ambition of Steam engines and has the same character as his father. Like his father, an extremely likeable guy.
Fred's legacy to Jack, was his famous Traction Engine, 'Betsy'.
You can see a 'Young Jack' stood on the foot plate.

............And there is NO WAY, you would get me to the top of that tower, harness or not.

R.I.P. Fred.

I really enjoyed his vision of life and his TV programmes were compulsive viewing.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I recall on one programme hearing that he didn't 'restore' that Traction engine - He 'built' every piece of it from scratch. Can anyone confirm?

He was married several times as apparently he was a difficult bugger to live with.

How old is he, 60'ish.
