Default forestry in a real slump or Canadians poor management

It looks like some real bad times ahead for the forestry industry in British Columbia!Lots of contractors are going broke.Madill (makes logging equiptment for all over the world) just anounced that they are going bankrupt! There are a lot of small towns that are starting to really hurt.Forestry is still the #1 industry in B.C. but I guess the 2010 winter games (Whistler) will save the day, haha
On the bright side my daughter is back from New Zealand, and she loved it,be beautiful country and the people were great, and very polite!

It appears that the Canadian forestry management was doomed for a long time with the govt propping it up.

Problem isn't demand, it's cost/competitiveness.

All the time sad to hear coz the workers are just that, whether you are cutting a tree for BC forestry, your neighbour or Bigfoot you sweat the same, shame, once again the desk jockeys and shiny asses to thank!

Glad to hear your daughter made it home safe and sound S.K.
(one worried dad to another)

How did their rugby go?

Hopefully she didn't come home with any tattoo's, piercings or New Zealand boyfriends.

Weyerhaeuser will be closing their Hudson Bay, Sask. Strand board mill in June 2008. The plant will be mothballed until a further date, and the depressed US housing market was blamed. This will put 170 people at the mill out of work, not to mention the other support and supply people.

About 2 years ago they closed their pulp/paper mill is Prince Albert, Sask. The mill was sold to Dom-tar, and currently sits idol. The past Provincial Government had offered Dom tar a 99 million incentive package to re-open the mill, but after being defeated in a Provincial election, the offer was rescinded by the New Government.

While I hate to agree with Ekka, the reality is that the profitability of such enterprises MAY not be large enough for the Chief financial officers and the shareholders. The media is finally getting wise enough to realize that the closures aren't JUST effecting the Union staff, but usually MORE people in the supply sector.

On the other hand, if anyone picks a scrap with these large multi-national companies and expect to win, they probably would be considered delusional.

Very interesting long article here.

A tall tree in a global forest

Quote:
Canadian-based forestry companies lost $552-million in the third quarter of 2008. Of 15 companies tracked by PricewaterhouseCoopers, only one — Domtar Corp. — reported a profit, of $45-million. Sino reported $93-million in third-quarter net income.

Had you invested $100 in January, 2005, in West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. it would be worth $68 today; $100 in Canfor Corp. would be $55. A similar investment in Sino would be worth $235, even after the global economic crisis sent the company’s shares into freefall.
Quote:
The report did not touch on the newest frontier, Russia, where Moscow is encouraging development of its huge forests. In 2008, it imposed a 25% export tax on logs to force investment in domestic sawmills and slow the pace of unprocessed lumber leaving its borders. (An 80% tax was scheduled for this month, but has now been delayed.) Finnish giant Stora Enso OYJ and U.S. heavyweight International Paper Company have been early movers in Russia, arriving in 1998. Stora Enso now has five saw and packaging mills there, while International Paper announced a US$1.5-billion spending plan in Russia last October.
Anyway ... have a read. Very interesting.

I worked 30 years for the largest forestry company here in Manitoba Canada [Tolko MB]. Our [11 acre under one roof] lumber division just shut down a month ago and doesn't expect to start up until spring/summer when the building season in the US picks up again. Now our pulp/paper mill is a different story. This mill is still breaking production records and has been operating 24 hrs since it first opened in 1969. This mill has a niche and produces SPX kraft paper, strongest paper in the world which is sold around the world for making cement bags, feed bags etc. Our northern Manitoba black spruce [100 yr old tree with a 4 inch bhdiameter] is the contributer for this strong paper. Our lumber is made from our white spruce and jack pine.
90% of Canadian lumber goes to the United States and as we all know how the economy is doing there, not alot of Canadian lumber is crossing the border at the moment.

Hey TreeDimensional I live just across the border from Hudson Bay,Saskatchewan here at The Pas Manitoba. I was born and raised in Choiceland, Saskatchewan.
Yes too bad for the mills at Hudson Bay and Prince Albert but good for our mill though ,all that unused Northern Sakatchewan timber is coming to The Pas.
I believe Weyerhauser [American company] is the largest forestry company in the world. They can pick or choose where they want to operate. They never came to Manitoba. Our Tolko mill is owned by two brothers from Vernon B.C. They have about 9 mills across western Canada.
