Default forestry in a real slump

It looks like some real bad times ahead for the forestry industry in British Columbia!Lots of contractors are going broke.Madill (makes logging equiptment for all over the world) just anounced that they are going bankrupt! There are a lot of small towns that are starting to really hurt.Forestry is still the #1 industry in B.C. but I guess the 2010 winter games (Whistler) will save the day, haha
On the bright side my daughter is back from New Zealand, and she loved it,be beautiful country and the people were great, and very polite!

It appears that the Canadian forestry management was doomed for a long time with the govt propping it up.

Problem isn't demand, it's cost/competitiveness.

All the time sad to hear coz the workers are just that, whether you are cutting a tree for BC forestry, your neighbour or Bigfoot you sweat the same, shame, once again the desk jockeys and shiny asses to thank!

Glad to hear your daughter made it home safe and sound S.K.
(one worried dad to another)

How did their rugby go?

Hopefully she didn't come home with any tattoo's, piercings or New Zealand boyfriends.

Weyerhaeuser will be closing their Hudson Bay, Sask. Strand board mill in June 2008. The plant will be mothballed until a further date, and the depressed US housing market was blamed. This will put 170 people at the mill out of work, not to mention the other support and supply people.

About 2 years ago they closed their pulp/paper mill is Prince Albert, Sask. The mill was sold to Dom-tar, and currently sits idol. The past Provincial Government had offered Dom tar a 99 million incentive package to re-open the mill, but after being defeated in a Provincial election, the offer was rescinded by the New Government.

While I hate to agree with Ekka, the reality is that the profitability of such enterprises MAY not be large enough for the Chief financial officers and the shareholders. The media is finally getting wise enough to realize that the closures aren't JUST effecting the Union staff, but usually MORE people in the supply sector.

On the other hand, if anyone picks a scrap with these large multi-national companies and expect to win, they probably would be considered delusional.
