Thought this might be a good thread. In addition if anyone is not doing anything

at the moment go to US OPEN?-?MEMPHIS TN

and you can watch the world championships of racquetball (US OPEN) and register with your e mail address

You will see a great training sport for tree work for conditioning. It is a riot too.

There are 2 semi finals today and the final tomorrow on the internet.

If this is not interesting to you, I'd love to hear some of your conditioning schemes for our job.

You all ever want to build up the quads for spiking etc. the best thing I have ever found is the Frank Zane leg blaster. Go to The Official Frank Zane Website and check it out. I have had one for maybe 15 years.

If you absolutely must do it, you can't beat 20 minutes peak to peak training on a staionary resistance bike. You will see stars .....

I tried spin class once the women were good looking and coped with it fine but me and the rugby player were red in the face sweating like pigs and puffing like trains at the end, then trying to look cool walking to the door afterwards was like a scene from the monty pythons funny walk sketch. never again!

I have watched the spinning and it looks like torture. I run one day on treadmill 35 to 40 mins and alt days do a combination of Stairmaster and stationary bike (Airdyne) at my own pace. I also do a split routine on weights of one day upper body and the next day lower body and then take a day off. I also play a racquetball league 1 or 2 times a week.

When you get older (old) you got to hit the gym. The gym is in my garage or I could never get myself to go.

If you want the workout of your life try high impact aerobicsIf that doesn't get you huffn and puffin try doing a full training session doing genuine Muay Thai. The forbiden martial art!..These boys finnish their training regeme with more explosive fitness than when they first start.
For instance try and do 5 sets of roundhouse kicks to your punching bag finnishing with more power in the last set than the first...warm up first you dont want to pull a hamstring..it will suprize you how hard this can be.
I think you need to train acording to your needs.

I agree JayD, I was in the Martial Arts for years and it is a great work out. The stretching just makes you feel good too. I was in Okinawan Issinryu (sp?) and was teaching after a few years. That roundhouse kick takes a lot of energy. I was watching Silva doing it in his training prior to whoopin up on a new guy last night. What kind of Martial Arts you into Galbee? JayD?

I think the core is so important in all this stuff incl. climbing.

Here's my workout that has evolved over the years:

Day 1
3 sets of bench press then 2 sets of rowing
3 sets of shoulder press then 2 sets of shoulder shrugs
3 sets of dumbell fly's then 2 sets of lateral raises with dumbells
3 sets of incline press and pushups with feet in air and hands on dumbells
then 2 sets of pullups or latmachine pulldowns

Day 2
3 sets of squats then 2 sets of toe raises
3 sets of curls then 2 sets of tricep extensions
3 sets of leg extensions then 2 sets of leg curls
3 sets of wrist curls then 2 sets of reverse wrist curls

I do core work (back, side, stomach) and grippers. Then I take a day off that can stretch into 2 or 3 days off if I am real busy and tired.

The weights are done in double sets and are opposites (push/pull). I stretch during and before and after but nothing formal.

A good traverse with just a climb line will ensure you have a good strong grip.

Treevet,
I have studied many hard forms of Karate whilst I was growing up, Bruce Lee was one of heroes aswell as Chuck Norris to name a few. My style has no style it is forever evolving after all it was meant to be forgotten So it becomes more like a natural reaction then a rehearsed senario. One style I have studied I will mention is not by it's style but by it's interperation of it's style "The Way of The Continual Fist" That is to say once combat has started it's not stoped until it's finnished, anything that get through your defences is incorporated into your style..."resistance is futile"...LOL.

But a fighter without his fitness is like a boat without water!
All this study of martial arts has made me not want to fight, When I have to I usually leave them totaly "kungfused"...LOL..
All The Best
JayD

You know, looking back when I was young and just getting started, I was sometimes scared because I wasn't sure I was fit enough while spiking or climbing way up in trees. I would always do the job anyway but fear can be distracting.

Conversely I think that fear while climbing (esp. the inexperienced) takes away energy in droves. These are 2 reasons our job demands fitness for safety, both cardio and strength.

Well said Dave,I've found myself up in several trees being nervous, however they were either badly decayed and i was worried about it splitting with me in it or it was dead for several years.
