Default Drought Questions For Australians

Hi, Ol?,

I've been reading bits about this drought you guys have got on down there and was just wondering:
1, Are you all still able to shower or bath?
2, Do you still have water to flush the toilets?
3, Does the foul water usually go to a public sewer or a Septic tank?
4, If the waste goes to a septic tank, is the cleaner outlet water used to
water the garden?

Cheers,

Nick.

Yes, but they're handing out free 4 min timers to get you out quick.

Yes, sanitary reasons but they're asking you to fit dual flush toilets.

In city they go to a sewer system, regional they may go septic and have what's called a silage hose to "grey" water the garden. In the city they're recycling the sewer water after filtration back into the dam. That project should be complete in around 18months.

See above.

The situation is getting dire now. We are at level 5 restrictions. Only bucket watering of plants (lawns banned) between 4pm and 8pm a couple days per week.

Household water use is under the scope. House holds using more than 800 litres a day will be investigated and recommendations must be implemented or penalties.

Topping up of pools prohibited unless 4 water saving devices fitted (pool cover, dual flush toilets, front loader washing machine, low flow shower heads) ... bugger that so I installed a water tank that hopefully catches enough rain to fill the pool.

Here's a link to the dam stats, total is 19.34% at the moment.

Nick, the biggest worry for people living down there like Eric is that when (hopefully soon) rain does break the drought the seriousness of the current situation will be lost in the jubilation of recieving life giving rainfall. Some very serious questions have to be answered and not just for the LGA of Brisbane or even the State Govt.
How could the capital city of our State get to the point where the water supply has fallen so very low without radical response in policy and admin of water resources?
Why are the people in Qld happy to so massively waste such a precious resource then turn around and expect to be bailed out by the authorities?

Having come to this beautiful part of the world from Sub Saharan Africa I was and still am appauled at the waste of water and electricty that goes on here. This country is apart from Antartica the driest continent on the planet yet we seem to have adopted non of the simple personal attitudes and activities that are the norm in other less dry parts of the world!

I really hope that the rains do fall over the catchment of the dams for people in the South East, to relieve the current situation, but I feel that in the long term we all have to recognise the part we play personally in perpetuating much of the crisis in water and other resources that we all like to blame on the politicians, industry, and global warming (and yes they all have significant parts in it too).

Cheers Eric,

The situation does look serious.
I was enquiring because of the Palm tree dropped crown post.
When I was in England we used to add a system to the outlet of the septic tank.
Using a sump pump in the tanks final stage to pump the water into pipes dug under the lawn of the clients garden, in a herringbone fashion.
But the water could be directed anywhere including to trees etc.
It's probably already being done but I just thought I'd give it a mention.
It could be used even if you were on main sewer if a tank was fitted.
Every bit helps.
Nick.

We have a 20m flexible hose on the outlet of the washing machine to water the garden ... many do.

Boa, I was gob smacked by the attitude toward water when I moved here ... I came from Adelaide, 500mm annual rainfall and conservation was always thought about.

The neighbour across the road continued washing down the driveway until it was banned ... she's a school teacher! She even got a blower but prefered the hose, I never seen such waste as here ... it's ingrained in the peoples attitudes.

Oh yeah, it was only 2007 that Qld prohibited wholesale land clearing ... they were the worst in Australia and 6th worst in the world.

The vegetation laws similar.

"She'll be right" has bit many on the azz real good, deservedly so.

How is the water charged for there?
We are all on meters here and for the first few cubic metres per period it's only about ?1 a metre but after that it is priced at a higher level up to another set amount and then it goes to another higher level etc.
We never had a meter in England before we left (though they were implementing them for everyone slowly) and never bothered what we used, bit different here now though.
Made me laugh what you said about the school teacher hosing the drive down,
Bet she doesn't teach rural science, but can obviously afford the water bills.
Someone should tell one of the kids in the class that she's a water waster, get them to ask a few questions of her about it.

As residents we get an allowance if you like for the year, ours up here is 170Ml and that is covered by your rates. However if you use more than that in the year you have to pay excess water charges. For Ekka its much more serious now, and his council are pushing for residents to use only 140lts per day. Here is a PDF of the restrictions Brisbanites face now;

Melbourne's 9 dams dropped under 30% capacity this week.

http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599...00-421,00.html
Quote:
It is only the second time dams have fallen below 30 per cent since May 29, 1968, when Victoria was recovering from the 1967-68 drought.

Quote:
MELBOURNE households have cut their water use by 4.5 billion litres under the new stage 3a water restrictions.

Melbourne's water use was 13 per cent lower last month compared with April 2006, despite this year's higher average temperature for the month. Households used 29.5 billion litres, compared with 34 billion litres in April last year.
Crikey, didn't realise you guys were down that far.

Sydney's results ...

http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems...5/s1914027.htm

Quote:
The New South Wales Government says dam levels in Sydney have an extra three months supply because of the recent rain.

The Water Minister, Phil Koperberg, says above average rainfall since February has seen dam levels increase by more than four per cent.

Overall Sydney's dam levels are at just over 38 per cent of capacity.

Mr Koperberg says while the increase is good, it is not good enough.

"So all in all, whilst it's by no means the end of the drought, what we've seen now is water levels being at the same point as what they were at the beginning of summer," he said.

"And it's also due to the very discriminate use of water by Sydneysiders."

"Sydneysiders generally have adhered very well to the restrictions and I think have adopted a different culture to water use. I think we're now all seeing the senselessness in pouring drinking water on cars."

I found this quick reference chart

http://www.weatherchannel.com.au/Mag...late=DamLevels

Bloody ripper eh?

I am proud as an ex- South Australian to note their water levels considering their average annual rainfall is only 565mm

And even in drought Brisbane got that, just shows what planning does ... something these Queenslanders are yet to get their head around.

Hey, there's a bunch of ads you can watch here that's interesting.

Apparently Townsville is the destination for folks driven to move by the lack of reliable water infrastructure...the best location for long term reliable water supply...Ha! the folks up here are worse than Ekka describes in Brissy, you'd think we were in the rain forest the way they waste water!! This is the dry tropics up here Brigalow belt country, I'm sorry to say I fear things will get a lot worse before they get any better.

What was interesting to see was SA going to level 3 restrictions when water levels are over 60%.

The idiots here wasted like no tomorrow.

My tanks full, and hey presto I got a $1000 govt chq today for fitting a tank, so I was only like $600 out of pocket.

They are laying pipeline like no tomorrow here, fastest pipe laying schedule in the world they reckon. But hiccups, wrong bedding material and dodgey pipes imported from Korea! HAHA, buy that junk serves ya right. This is what happens when you throw away tarrifs and let cheap shit into the country.
