Another article says its been detected in Victoria and NSW, kinda concerning. Half the time you don't realise you've been bit by a mosquito.

Man dies from mosquito-borne virus - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Quote:
A man has died and several other people remain ill after contracting a mosquito-borne virus in Western Australia.

The man died in April after contracting Murray Valley encephalitis in the state's North West.

The Department of Health is warning people living or travelling anywhere north or east of Perth to take extra measures to protect themselves against mosquitos.

Other possible cases of the infection are being investigated.

Murray Valley encephalitis has been detected in the Kimberley, Pilbara, Gascoyne, Goldfields, Midwest and central wheatbelt regions and the Department says people in the South West and Perth are also at risk.

Symptoms of the virus include fever, drowsiness, headache, stiff neck, nausea and dizziness and it can lead to paralysis, brain damage and death.

Entomologist Sue Harrington says MVE can kill within days.

"People should seek medical advice quickly, not put it off until the next day, but do it immediately because clearly you need to be in medical care if you have Murray Valley encephalitis," she said.

Meanwhile, there has been a spike in the number of Ross River cases diagnosed in WA.

More than 700 people have been diagnosed with the mosquito-borne virus since July last year - that is up from about 400 at the end of February.

In the South West, 220 people have been diagnosed and 240 in the metropolitan area.

The symptoms of Ross River virus include lethargy, swollen joints, sore muscles, rashes, fever and headaches.

best to use repellant, Bushmans is best.

I have all the symtoms of Ross River at the moment, they are waiting for some tests to come in.

I do Landcare next to Estuarine Saltmarsh Mangrove Complex. Heaps of tests for symptoms, for other things from the doctor, then I walked in and said "its not Ross River is it", do not know why it didn't occur to me sooner. Makes you real sick, been off work a while. Sucks. It's gone to my hands and feet, finding it hard sometimes getting up from a crouch, swollen joints then real sore muscles. Been a few months. What worries me is some people do not recover.

Nothing wrong in spraying yourself before work, I did mostly, but you know, sometimes you forget the spray, the suckers down there bite you through your clothes. The mozzies with the striped legs carry it. Bushmans works, but spray clothes as well.

Generally the healthier you are, the better your immune system can fight the infection. So, lots of fresh fruit, raw vegetables, nuts, legumes plus ginger and garlic to fight the infection, THe more food your immune system has, the faster you recover. Usually the people that do not recover are in poor health -- I doubt you fit that description.

Thanks for asking Done it.

Yes it was Ross River Virus.

Going better now, past the swollen joints and stuff, it hit every muscle, surprised at how painful that was, man, I'm not looking forward to getting old, been moving around like an ancient old fart......

But I'm on the improve, back to work, hopefully time will sort the rest.

Now I can't get it again.

Will check on that info, might be worth the crew getting it down at Landcare days.

I've been drinking this jungle juice a friend gave me called Kefir water; pro-biotic with lots of ginger, and lemon in it. Seems to have helped. Strange stuff, you grow it, the kefir. The water tastes like mild ginger beer.

You always seem to have all this health info Treeshaveneeds, have you studied it?

I have studied some herbal stuff, and subscribe to two newsletters for alternative health treatments. Western medicine is great stuff, but here in North America they don't seem to want you to get better, more money that way.

So, I have turned to herbal and other health practices that work a lot better, and get better results. For example, a heavy cold can be treated with zinc 50-100 mg every 2 hours (but not longer than 3 days running) until the cold stops. And I take a maintenance dose of 50 mg daily -- also need to intake copper to balance. While Zinc helps with colds, Selenium does better with viruses 200 mcg/day for active viruses (50 mcg maintenance dose). And ginger has a lot of health benefits -- so an inch of root a day makes a huge difference - can be made into a tea, but ingesting the root - finely ground or delicately diced also works really well.

Thanks for asking.

aw crikey JayD, thanks.

Treeshaveneeds, our soils here are terribly deficient in selenium, a supplement is needed for sure, maybe that's why we all get so many flus here in Oz. Might get one come to think of it.

And our doctors are the same, I feel like I've been in a episode of that television show "House". They even did a full MRI with radiation injected,..... , ..... at least I know there is a brain in there, I have proof........

Enough of doctors, exit, stage left for me, their not getting any more of my hard earned cash. Food and physio, done by myself, self help is the only way to go.

You all must use the mozzie spray tho, it's a bit of time off work, so cover up all.

Hi Julia You might also consider Bromelain - extracted from pineapples - to promote healthy joint function and it has the ability to promote a normal inflammatory response to help you back to health sooner.

One of the newsletters is Dr David Williams - the Alternatives newsletter - now also available digitally for significantly less than the printed version. Well worth looking at.

Exclamation Re: Deadly mosquito

Im wondering weather your virus is akin to a realatively new
virus we call west nile thats moved north into canada that mimic
the symptoms described in the forum here? This one is tolerated
by most and often mistken for flu like symptoms achy muscles /joints
and such but moves on to menengitis like symptoms and death in about
1 in 120 to 150 infected persons. the health officials tell us to bag and
collect dead crows and send them in for testing and field tests in larvea
are conducted regularly

Hi President

different virus family, but similarities, both have been found in horses and have host animals, here it is possums, but Ross River is non lethal, but can give you long term problems with polyarthritis. Generally people get over it quickly, with nothing but flu like symptoms. Some people take months to recover and others get chronic fatigue. It's been months with me, and it has gone to arthritis (minimal) in the joints in more than five joints, hence the MRI, they thought it was genetic Rheumatoid Arthritis. But most people end up with some Arthur eventually, so I'm not complaining, least it's not what my grandma had. In our work as manual workers, What's another ache, just add it to the list.

Murray Valley Encephlitis, which is another mossie born virus originally discussed in this thread has killed some people, and does have a link to the one you have, but it is in the west here. The one you have up there sounds bad too.

I'm not very fond of mossies now. Cover up.

I'm glad you got over it, but you can have recurring symptoms for a while.

Apart from the other suggestions Olive Leaf Extract is great for your immune system. Works on colds and flu I know, and is recommended for RRV by quite a few people. Get the best Australian one, good for other stuff as well.
