Default Christmas nuts.

A common Christmas occupation is cracking nuts for snacks. Much more healthy than all this sugar stuff.
I don't know if Christmas nuts has another meaning too, in your parts of the world. (Yes, I know "nut" means something else too, but that's another matter.)
Here it means riddles to find out of, questions to answer, problems to solve. Amusing occupations during all these holidays.

Let us start with an easy one. Who can find the solution? Get these two pieces apart from each other. Perhaps some photoshop program may be useful, drawing arrows to explain how to do it.

At local markets etc you get these stalls with tons of things like that. There's always heaps of people hanging around having a go, frustrating puzzles. Then the stall holder walks up and in a second undoes the puzzle you swore couldn't happen.

Drive you mad those puzzles.

Hi Leif,

You push the string of one side through the hole (either side) of the other then push the bead through the loop and pull it back through.

'Twas not so easy Eric, I had to make one to solve the problem, I could not figure it out in my head!
The first attempt was two lollipop sticks with the string tied to each end, no joy!
I had to build one closer to the image supplied by leif!
I used a small mould to melt rope into, then stuck the rope into the molten rope to form the ends.
This is what I came up with:

Very good, Clementine. What have the other blokes done during the holidays?? Eating and ? Brainwork is good.
Well, I shall be careful to talk too big. I am not so clever about these things myself. But when I make them, I have to learn the trics. Many of these toys are built upon the same ideas.

Shall we try another one? The ring shall off. The ring and end pieces may pass through the cleft, but the balls are to big.
No pocket knives or other dirty trics!

Hi Leif,

Is the goal here just to remove the ring?
I assume that the diameter of the ring is too small to pass over the right hand end of the main body.

Yes, the ring shall be removed. It is too small to pass over the right end, but may pass through the cleft.
Good luck!

Cracked that little nut Leif
A little harder than the other one I thought.

I'll keep the answer under wraps though

I don't suppose you get much light up there this time of year..I see from your pics what a lovely place it is.
How much in Euros would a typical 3/4 bed bungalow with 2/3000 m2 be?

I heard your country has just about the highest standard of living in Europe.
Would you confirm that?

I thought you would crack that nut too, when I saw your serious efforts with the other one. You are clever.

Well, do you want to move to Norway?
Just now we have about -15C, only a little snow, and daylight from about 9AM to 4PM. Darkness all day long is only in North Norway, north of the polar circle.
When it is cold, the moisture from the river causes beautiful white frost on the trees (), giving a lot of good photo motives. Nice to hear you like my pics.

Bungalow prices, that depends of course on age and standard. In cities prices are a lot higher. However, the finance crisis makes them drop.
Here i Lunde you may get an ok medium standard house for between 100.000 and 150.000 E.
May be we have the highest standard of living in Europe, but it is expensive to live here. Cars are expensive, we need warm houses in this climate, food costs a lot. But people having a job earn what they need, and maybe a bit more.

But are we more happy than other people? I think we are on top in use of pills too....

Leif.

Not so clever Leif, trial and error only. First time I got the ring off I could not remember how I'd done it and it took another 10 minutes to get it back on and 20 more to work out how to get it off again.

House prices seem reasonable there, a little cheaper than here for the same. As you say it depends what part of the country. Central Portugal is pretty cheap until you get close to the sea.

The hours of light are close to English times. Temperatures quite a bit lower though.

Cars are very expensive to buy here too. Last year I paid €4250 for a 1994 Totota Dyna 150 truck with 200,000 Km on the clock.
A BMW 320D, 2001, good condition, with 120,000 Km is worth @ €14,000.

Do many Norwegians speak English like yourself?

I would love to move there for a while to experience some of the country but I think we are stuck here for a bit due to the weak pound.

Very good! Good to see you enjoy these games.

I've sold nearly all of them before Christmas, but I have one more picture. If you want more, I'll have to make some new for photomodels.

Clementine, concerning your question about English spoken i Norway. I learned it during my school time, high school, college, teacher's college. Besides that, I have English friends so I can practice a bit. And of course I've learned a lot by chatting with you guys!
But a lot of people at my age do not speak English or speak very little, mainly because they do not practice or they chose an education where English was no subject.
To-day, many children and young people speak English quite well. They learn it at school, it's the computer language, and we have got a lot of English words in our daily talk. Fast food, shop, weekend, and so on. A lot of peole regret this development, but it is about stopping a train.... .

Now, a new toy. Remove the string with the ball. A lot worse, I think, and nearly impossible without making a model.

I like that one too Leif. I'm glad I left the pieces loose so i could start over. I had quite a tangled mess for a while. It's all about the path on the first move. I am getting quite a collections of cracker nuts. Do you have any more?

Yes, here's anotheone. Tis one is rather simple too, thats why many people find it hard to solve.
We make a lot of those at school. Pupils bring them home and make the parents get grey hair.

Here it is, just move the ball from A to B.
