Default Ban The Tan! The Claire Oliver Challenge.

Hi guys & gals.

Just thought i'd throw this out there. Thinking of how all us tree workers spend so much much time in the harsh Aussie sun.

My wife was recently diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer at 36.

Fortunately, it was found early enough to be surgically removed (7cm x 7cm chunk) & likely successful.

When confronted with the idea of losing your wife & 2 kids under 2 being left motherless is a horrible feeling.

This was ONLY prevented by early detection.

I STRONGLY urge anyone, whether they have spent a lot of time in the sun or not, to get a proper mole check done.

If you don't find one early it can & will kill you.

Now to raise money & awareness she is taking part in the Claire Oliver Challenge.

Everyday Hero: Clare Oliver Challenge

All money raised goes to the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

I didn't really post this looking for donations (but feel free!) really just to make everyone, especially those working outside to take the time out & go to a specialist skin clinic & get checked.

Clare Oliver Challenge
The Clare Oliver Challenge invites you to "Ban the Tan this summer" - helping to keep your skin safe while raising funds for melanoma research.

By taking on the Clare Oliver Challenge, you're making the following pledge to protect your skin:

I will not get burnt;
I will avoid any deliberate tanning through sun baking or using a solarium;
When the UV is 3 and above, I'll protect my skin in line with SunSmart advice:
* SLIP on sun protective clothing that covers as much of my body as possible.
* SLOP on SPF 30+ broad spectrum water resistant sunscreen, liberally to dry skin, at least 20 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply every two hours when outdoors. Never use sunscreen to extend my time in the sun.
* SLAP on a broad brimmed hat that shades my face, neck and ears.
* SEEK shade
* SLIDE on sunglasses

Help raise funds for melanoma research.
So register today and start spreading the word that you're 'Banning the Tan this summer!'

Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre

The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre is the only specialist cancer hospital in Australia. It also houses the largest cancer research group in the country.

Cancer touches all of us either directly or indirectly during our lives. Today, more than half of those diagnosed with cancer will have a successful response to treatment. This significant progress is due to the dedication of clinicians, nurses, scientists, volunteers and benefactors, who are all creating a better future for people touched by cancer.

Sir Peter MacCallum believed that nothing but the best is good enough in the treatment of cancer. We strive to maintain his dream.

I hope that your wife is going to be OK. A good sun screen really helps with it to. I know, the saw dust and everything will stick to it, but what is more important. The sticking sawdust, that can be washed off at the end of the day, or can be wiped off periodically, or cancer from the sun.
I always wear a hat, and a long sleeved shirt whole working out side, and try to keep my exposed skin, like my hands, and neck, ears, covered with sun screen, if I'm going to be out for long periods of time, working in the sun. Periodically, I see someone burnt by the sun, and I tell them to put shaving cream, what we put on our faces prior to shaving, that will pull the heat out of the sun burn. Bruce.

Thats unpossible! Although I have been thinking about attaching some velcro to my helmet and getting some kind of cloth and put velcro strips on that and stick it on the helmet to cover my neck. Its really retardedly hot when you are up a tree with the sun burning you like bacon and eggs on a radiator.

@ Bruce - Sawdust gets stuck to you regardless on a hot day, you start sweating and that acts like super glue.

I'm not arguing about the saw dust not sticking regardless. I sweat all the time, even when I'm not working hard. I just think it would be a lot safer to use something like good sun screen, to help out.
None of my farm tractors have cabs on them, so I try my best to protect myself from the sun. Out in the open field, your in the sun, without any shade, and can get a little baked out there too. Bruce.

Does any remember that TV commercial about sunscreen that was banned?

It opened with like all these black fellas in the sun boasting how they got plenty melatonin and can be in the sun all day long unlike the whiteys. The whitey's need <forget brand name> sunscreen bla bla bla .... bloody funny it was and got banned.

I'm a bit like that, in fact when I was a kid I was nick named nigger. Cop that!
