Due to another thread I started looking for a wood density chart, is there one on here already? I've searched and can't find one. Once a client of mine, an ex Norwegian sea Captain told me about very hard timber he used to load out of east Africa, Ebony. Anyway I found this, Wood Density Ironbark, Grey Box and Grey Gum around here also Turpentine and Stringy Bark [Stringy is not there.] I've also heard Osage Orange and Mesquite are really hard US timbers. Ironbark: 1199 Grey Box: 1199 Ebony: 1079 Osage Orange:800 Mesquite:800 It doesn't have everything but it is a good site, try the search page for your local trees and see how it goes. |

As shown in that other thread almost similar densities have wide varying "hardness".

It's a bit complicated. What I was looking for really was something like this. I was looking for some info on Gidgee, Acacia Cabagei. It's been a while since I worked out west but it was hard. According to this list it weighs 78-85lbs per cubic foot, pretty heavy compared to most of the others. Yes but heavy vs strong are two different things. We need to find the the strengths as well, and that seems hard to find. All tests should be done at the same place too, so if some-one gets an oak Mpa shear test on 2" x 2" section at place A and compares a euc test from place B is it the same? Is it the same size section and the test done exactly the same? Likely not, so be vigilant.
