I also use this on reduction cuts. Same theory as when making a cut when there is no visable callor.

Does the drawing make sence?

Adventitious shoots help compartmentalize. Other than aesthetics, seems that they're good for the wound.

They usually pop up when cuts are too big...

... or when too much foliage has been removed in the one pruning sessions

... or when the apically dominant bud which produces auxin has been removed and lateral suppression no longer exists.

... or when you have a highly reactive species like Jacaranda

I'm sure there's more also, but looking for shoot growth initiated by pruning unlike say horizontal branches that turn into harp branches.
