I find this one of the best and well illustrated pieces of work regarding the topic. http://www.na.fs.fed.us/spfo/pubs/mi...ecay/cover.htm I always think it will disappear from public view so it would be good to get a hard copy or PDF. Well you can at this link, it's a 6.9mb PDF though. http://www.na.fs.fed.us/spfo/pubs/mi.../treedecay.pdf

Your right Ekka its a great doc, and has already bee removed from some of my favourite sites. For those getting their heads around CODIT try to read as much of Alex Shigo's work as you can, Alex is no longer with us but his work still insppires and directs what most Arborists do day to day. Here's the best site for accessable articles, also check out the Tree Dictionary on line trhat has really fabulous info too. http://home.ccil.org/~treeman/shigo/index.html SF |

The works of Alex Shigo, after his days at the US Forest Service, are part of Shigo and Trees, Associates LLC Shigo and Trees > Home ( DNN 3.3.7 ). He started Shigo and Trees, Associates in 1985 and the first book was A New Tree Biology and the CODIT model is explained there.

Thanks for that link, I like the store and prices. Over here we get ripped off a little with book prices, nice site.

Glad you like it! Yes, must agree that the mark up for some international booksellers is quite astonishing. Shipping is quite reasonable and quick for "regular" size orders.

I'm confused whether wall 4 is the same as the callus (meristematic) tissue we commonly see from the exterior. The callus many associate with 'healing' over a wound, is that the 4th wall in action? I seem to be reading through and finding that the 4th wall exists internally to stop the outward spread of decay. Any clarity? jp |

We're the tree site ... climbing, chainsaws etc are just the tools, but the reasoning is here. Always run a search here if you are looking for something, we load stacks of documents etc here about all sorts of stuff. Often when writing reports I use the stuff here, lot easier to find than on my PC!
