Question Black Cherry Tree

Yesterday I move a Cherry tree in my yard to a new spot and would like to know if I did any harm to it?

This Cherry tree is one that you would find in the woods and what they get Cherry Wood from. The tree is only 3 feet tall and I planted it 2 years ago. Can you tell me how long it will take to get to be any size to it? Also I would like to know if this is a nice tree to have in your backyard? I live in town. The reason why I got the say Wild Cherry Tree is to attract birds to my backyard.

Please gave me as much information that I need to keep this tree from dieing.

I know what prunus serotina looks like; I do not know what Yours looks like.

Get another this fall; just go to the woods (with permission.)

You say the tree is 3ft, what diameter of root ball was there when you dug it up, were ther many thin fiberous roots present? What size of hole did you put it in, what was the soil like and did you enrich it? What depth did you plant it? Have you been giving it water? Sorry i do not know Black Cherry, so cannot comment on much else. Pictures would be an excellent help, to get the best advise.

Some where I read that well nurtured trees with a concentration of roots closer to the trunk can be dug out at 6x caliper.

So if the tree is say 4" diameter, you come out 6x that which is 24", mark a circle and dig. Digging down real deep isn't as important as being further away. Now a 4' circular root ball might be too much for you to handle, dont know.

Like Blair says, those small hairy roots, they're the ones that do a lot of the work.

Different when they're container grown, the roots haven't spread out.

You can only water, mulch and fertilize with organic stuff like dynamic lifter or blood/bone etc, keep away from aggressive chemical fertilizers especially N loaded ones.

If you went out in the woods in most places in Ohio, you likely got a choke cherry (wild cherry=Prunus Virginiana) sometimes called Bird Cherry as birds clean off the pea size cherries. Biggest problems for them are tent caterpillers, and borers when stressed as in transplanted. Water a lot during the key periods of mid august to late when there is no rain for weeks and no water in the ground and they are losing mass water through the leaves. Water weekly otherwise (Sunday is a good day to remember ) unless it rains. As for tent caterpillers, wait until just after sunset and pick tents off and grind under your foot. They all return from feeding at that time. They should be just gaining momentum right now as they hatched about a week ago. (if you got them and it is obvious). Borers will be evidenced by hard jelly like substance on trunk and branches and at this point you may want to give up and find another to transplant, preferably in early fall.
