| For about 7 months now my tree has been looking worse and worse. Could you help me with some stuff to try or even what the cause may be? Also, what type is it? I do water it and put nutrients down but still no help. Could the other tree be killing it? ![]() ![]() ![]() |

| It looks like the root system took a major hit at some time. Also the emerald ash borer attacks from the canopy downwards. The borer leaves evidence in the form of "D" shaped bore holes ,as their larvae feed on the floum layer beneath the bark. Are the borers known to be in your area.If so ,you can have the tree treated with an injection,it may be too late and it is relatively expensive.Best results are seen in trees protected with the treatment ,cambium layer damage is permanent and the trees vascular system must "re-route" nutrients to survive .Obviously, at some point ,this becomes impossible and death of tree results.Good luck |

| Lets see pictures of the trunk where it goes into the ground. I'm of the opinion too that it's root damage. Not much you can do about that.

| The whole stone thing ..... grrrr, I cant stand that idea, sorry. I grind stumps and stones cost me money in many ways. Also I think they're useless as a mulch, hard to rake up from, noisy to walk on, suck if your bare foot, get kicked onto the lawn then the mower pings them out breaking windows, kids walk past pick up a handful and "rock ya roof", cats of the neighbourhood think it's a big litter tray, maybe worms even have trouble getting around on them but I'm not sure about that one, they heat up in the sun, they sink into the soil, etc etc etc But hey, if you like them well that's your choice. ![]()

| Herbicide? very likely! They're meant to kill broad leaf weeds. Biggest broad leaf weed in your yard - trees! Even Round Up® will do that to a tree with no organic matter on the ground. In Arizona with sand for soil, Round Up® (glyphosate) will kill all kinds of trees. i It doesn't break down until it hits significant organic matter - something I suspect is absent in your area. As TreeVet pointed out - they're way too deep - no visible root flares. As container grown trees, girdling roots may be an issue as well. Pull the stones back to a 3 foot radius around the tree, expose the root flares removing any girdling roots. Replace the stones with a little mulch and the trees will be better for it. |
