Default What can be done to save my Japanese Bloodgood Maple?

This tree is less than 10 years old and has always leafed out in the spring very nicely - until this year. (see pic) I am north of Cincinnati, Ohio and we experienced a mild winter with the exception of a few extremely cold days late in the season. Do we prune out the limbs that are barren or do we give it another year? I love the tree, but have never been crazy about its shape. Any ideas?

It's going to be even a crazier shape if you prune out the dead!

I say wait till end of summer.

So you are in agreement that the bare branches are dead and will need to be removed? That's a lot of dead branches -- Should I just replace it?

i would say yes remove it but you need to know what damaged that one before transplanting a new one, i.e. soil ph, type of soil clay, sand are there elevated amounts of mycelium in the area, high or low nitrogen, pottasium, phosphates, check the roots of the tree coming out look for damage or rot, these some of the basics, if you find anything post on here and we will endeavour to help dont forget to take pictures.

mb64, is it possible you could post a photo of the lower trunk, especially where it emanates out of the ground?

Here are some additional pictures of the tree. Any additional recommendations or thoughts would be appreciated.

Here's a similar case, look at what was done and try to do the same.
