Looks like a 'Pride of Barbados' - also called 'Dwarf Poinciana'. The proper botanical name for it is Caesalpinia pulcherrima.

It is indeed the "Pride of Barbados' (Caesalpinia pulcherrima . It does very well in Texas. With the freeze we had this last winter, it froze back to about 12 inches in my garden. Most winters, it hasn't frozen back at all but then again most winters in Austin don't see temperatures around 10ºF. It is late in coming out each spring, so don't be in too much of a hurry when cutting it back. It may not show any growth or new leaves until late April or early May. The seed pods (it's in the Pea family) produce numerous viable seeds which are easily sprouted and propagated. Each year, it will get larger and more amazing. Plant it on the south side of a protective wall or fence with full sun for the best results. |
