Just starting out in the climbing world and wondering does Australia have standards (minimum req's) with relation to harness set-ups. I ask as recently I read that a twisted clevis attached to a microcender (attached to flip line), is not approved by ANSI in the US. A bit confused with minimum requirements and legislative in Oz |

well, common sense says triple action carabiner right, screwgate biners got shafted years ago. But hows this, at the QAA Arborcamps @ 2005 they were pissing off people's screw-gate biners, but allowing screw-links to attach flip-lines at the adjuster end to the saddle. The genius reasoning was that you did the screw-link up with pliers and unlike a biner did not have to keep mucking about with it at interchanges etc, it could remain tight on your harness ..... but really, it is still a screw-link not triple lock. They are not allowed, even if they were rated they still are not because they are not triple lock and could undo without you knowing. Such is life, full of rules. I know if you get one and do it up with pliers that little chance is there that it undoes, but I do not make the rules. I personally liked the screw gates, I could easily test to see if they were screwed up, I could tighten them real good and trust them, but I have had a triple lock Kong undo. Watch them biners, closely, all the time.

Yeah Roger that. So what would be an alternative setup for someone looking at buying their initial purchase of gear? The majority of climbing I have done has been on unrated clevis-type setups. As I wish to move into the industry legit, there is an obvious need to be complying and using best industry practices. As a newbie with no immediate mentor any input is welcomed.

LJ21 One of the best places to learn about gear is to look at the what the tree climbing equipment suppliers are offering. I started out buying a minimal amount of the cheaper stuff and later when I had more funds I moved into some of the more expensive stuff, and by then a few people had shown me other methods and technique/equipment to try. For a start look amongst the sponsors for this site, one there has a useful website for climbing stuff. Climb safe RM |
