Default Twin Leader Cocos Palm

Saw this Cocos Palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana) in Southport, Qld and am quite intrigued by it's ability to develop twin leaders. (I apologise for the pic quality) Has anyone else seen this sort of thing? Or got a good explanation?

Hahahaha!!!!!!!

Twin leader Cocos. Ahhh it's ghoulish! Look away! Look away!!!!!!!

According to something I read and saved a long time ago, "Because of sublethal damage to the growing point by insects or a physical force such as lightning, aerial branching can occur abnormally in solitary palms. Examples of this are found in the coconut (Cocos nucifera) and palmyra (Borassus flabellifer). No technique has yet been devised to induce abnormal aerial branching for economic purposes."

ALSO there is a cool example of a branching Howea as seen on pages 10-12 of this PDF.

I must admit I am most fascinated by branching palms, especially Hyphaene. - Totally awesome...

fantastic, rare,i lol was told the palm at first goes into a serious stressed moment where the heat in the head almost dies, so it without a correct cut,as if you were to do in a hardwood, subordinate or remove a codominate leader, and you see those spouts comin off your cut,the tree pushing the secondary food storage trying to replace what was cut off,so the palm was stressed the heart damaged and tapped into its storage and produced another heart inwitch collected protien starch and symbeoticly fed the damaged heart back ,now you got 2 healthy hearts working together,,i dont no this was told 2 me, i no local and cant wait to get the pic stay in touch wit me i no of a queen palm wit 7 heads and off corse 7 different hearts amazing ill get it soon

It'd be like Clash of the Titans, I think it'd need some torture before being slayed just for having so many heads, decapitation one by one would be a galactic event IMHO!
