Default Tulip Trees Dying

We live in New Jersey in the eastern US. We recebtly ( 2 months ago) added about 4 to 6 inches of soil to our yard to try to solve a water collection problem. We recently noticed that two of our tuliptrees have dropped all their leaves and appear to be dead. Have we killed them by adding the soil? Can they be revived? Several other web sites indicated that dropped leaves could be a reaction to drought conditions. WQhile we have had a very dry July I don't believe this is the problem as the area still appears to be moist.

if you added the new soil right up to the trunks of the trees, you most likely suffocated them causing them to die, only way to fix it would be to remove the new added soil. try bending some of the smaller branches, if they are brittle and break the trees are gone if they are flexible they might still be alive

I agree with Treeluver's assessment.

I took your advice and bent a few branches back. Unfortunately they were dry so I guess I killed the trees, which I m very upset about. We removed the added dirt from around two other trees this morning and hopefully they will survive. My husband wanted to remove the dirt fromn around the seemingly dead tulip trees as well so we did just in case they have a chance to make it. We were wondering if we should fertilize them in some way and if that might help.

Thanks for your help
Chris

Dig down 6 to 12 inches and see how wet the soil is, whether the roots are drowning or if the soil is really dry, dying from lack of water.,
