I have a tulip poplar that was planted about 4-6 months ago. Its growth has been fine, but the leaves are continuously turning yellow, have brown spots and holes and fall off. They are always replaced by new vigorous growth. I put in two fertilized spikes about 4 months ago on opposite sides about drip line distance away from the trunk. I had a problem with beetles feeding on the tree, so i used Bayer Protect & Feed as directed. This has helped the pest problem. I have attached 3 pictures. Please help identify what is wrong with this tree please!!!! I have to resize the pics they will be posted shortly! ![]() ![]() Eastern Pa, US. looks like a caterpillar of some sort eating the leaves, the yellowing might be caused by overwatering or over fertalization, hard to say.Can i see some pics of the entire tree, also a pic of the root crown?

Definatly an insect of some sort, keep a close eye on the tree and if you see any insects on it,take a pic of it and post it here.Alos is the strap holding the prop up cutting into the trunk?

The straps are loose. I did find a Yellow Swallowtail caterpillar on it about 1-2 months ago. It was the only one I have ever seen on it. I will check more often. TY!

Yeah, you definately got something eating that tree, its hard to tell if there may be a disease problem too. 1 thing for sure, get that tree properly staked and remove the stake that it had from the nursery. Around here those Tulip trees are known for being scale magnets, thats not whats eating the leaves though. |

this tree may be planted too deep. this type of tree is better off being planted higher than the soil grade. perhaps you could remove the mulch from around the tree and post a picture or two. did you test the soil for drainage before planting?

I don't think its to deep personally, after a few pms and ome more info on the tree,i'd say besides the caterpillar,it has been over fertilized.I also think it might have leaf blight.

Is that a tie wrap marked red arrow? if so this could be part of the problem too. I agree with the planted too deep i would have said more down to the yellow line would be likely the level you are looking for and get another stake put in at an angle then remove the nursery one, plus what the other guys have said about the diseases.

I too have a tulip poplar which seems to have some sort of leaf disease. I planted it about a year ago from a pot, in which it had seemed to thrive. Now the leaves of its leader and one side branch seem to burn soon after they emerge. You cannot see them in the picture, but the trunk is covered with what I think are aphids the size of a pencil dot. ![]() I hope I've attached the picture correctly. R. Get some hort oil and spray that tree so those scale bugs die! Just follow the label. Also see this thread, all of it. ![]() Maple tree bark diesease
