hello, i'm andrew from las vegas, nevada...i planted a small tulip poplar about 4 weeks ago and was amazed by how quickly it sprouted new growth and how healthy it appeared. it's the end of summer here and it gets pretty direct sun most of the day. i have my irrigation system watering 3 times per day (6 am, 12:30 pm, and 6:30 pm) everyday still. about a week ago, my gardener shut my water off and forgot to turn it back on---it was down for 3 days...i noticed the poplar was drying up and realized the mistake...ever since, i've been running the system everyday again. i've noticed that the tree doesn't seem as healthy now and, in fact, it seems like some of the leaves are drying up and dying while some still seem to be sprouting...the tree looks like it's kind of wilting too. any thoughts? i would love to add some pics but i can't find the "add picture" link in the user cp to create an album...can i email them? thanks for any help. |

we need some pics of the stem, root flare and a pic of the whole area from a short distance away, that will allow us to see the whole picture. the problem is not on the foliage itself but the leaves do show signs of a problem. lets go back and look down and around where the tree was planted.

What is that structure next to the tree in the right side of the photos? It seems awfully close to a tree that can grow over 100' tall.

Alarm bells, those leaves have signs of flooding not drying. ![]() Tree is drowning. Can also happen when planted in such a way that the hole dug becomes a well. Imagine the hole is dug in a rock or clay soil, pop the tree in water away. Like a dam the hole drains slowly and the plant drowns.

also is that wall north or south facing? you could have major problems later if thats a hot wall the sun will reflect off it and stress the tree to death you being in a hot dry environment and all.

the structure next to the tree is my house--probably not a good idea to plant so close for potentially such a large tree??? the house faces south and does get a good deal of summer sun...i attached more pics of the situation...thanks for all your help and advice...i really appreciate your thoughts...i changed the watering to twice a day--early morning and late afternoon...every other day....

Yep, it's buried too deep and swap out those stones for mulch, stones heat up, raise soil temp, offer little in organic decomposition.

your biggest problems are the heat transferance from the stones and wall, a lack of organic material for decomposition and as/if it grows it is going to have the potential for damaging your wall and it will be more likely to have a root failure on the house side, you have like ekka said planted the specimen below the pot line potentially suffocating the tree. well thats just my 0.02c worth hope it helps
